Preference: Valentine’s Day

Louis:

“I hate the world...” you heard someone mumble in line. You were sitting in Starbucks, the comfy chairs by the window by yourself. You were reading a magazine and sipping your caramel latte when you heard this person mumble that.

He was wearing a black hoodie and black sunglasses, despite the fact that it was nighttime and indoors. He get muttering stuff to himself before he ordered a coffee. You were sitting minding your own business but a few minutes later, you were covered in coffee by the guy.

“Shit can this day get any worse?!” he cried out, he lifted off his hood and glasses and you realised he was crying. “I’m sorry,” he uttered, grabbing some napkins and trying to clean up.

“It’s fine. Really. Are you ok though?”

“Me?” he looked you in the eye and it was like he was surprised someone was asking him that.

“Yeah. You. Are you ok?” you asked again.

“No...” he mumbled. He started to get teary so you moved over and pulled him down to sit next to you as he broke down in tears. Thankfully, Starbucks was almost completely empty.

“Who are you?” he asked you in between sobs.

“My name’s Y/N. And you?”

“Louis...”

“Nice name.”

“You don’t have to make up stuff,” he uttered.

“I’m not. It’s a cool name. Suits you, from what you look like anyway,” you tried to pick up the mood a bit. “So what’s a guy like you doing in Starbucks at 9pm on Valentine’s Day?”

“My... my girlfriend Eleanor broke up with me... said she’d found someone better who could be there for her all the time. Dammit I always knew this job was going to ruin things!”

“Hey,” you tried to calm him down. “Coming from a girl’s point of view, a girl wants to have a boyfriend that can be there for them all the time,” he let out a sob at your words. “But... coming from my perspective, when you find the right guy, you know. And nothing gets in the way of you loving that person, not distance, not limited contact, not jobs... not anything. This girl obviously isn’t someone who’s good for you. If your job has you not being around a lot, then find a girl who can accept that forever, not just for a couple of years.”

He’d moved so he was facing you, he was listening to you with intent as you spoke. He calmed down and took a deep breath.

“You’re right... but how am I gonna find that person. I want someone now. It’s Valentine’s Day for goodness sake! And I’m newly single. I loved her... I really did... but I can’t believe she left me for some other guy and said all that stuff to me. It stings and it hurts,” he said, more tears flowing down his handsome face.

“I know it must have.”

“What am I going to do now? I’m the kinda guy who always wants to have a girl on his mind. Always. I have no one now. No one...”

“You’ll find someone. Someone who can just sit down with you in the time you have and talk. Make you feel better, not worse,” you said.

“You’re really nice Y/N,” he told you.

“Aww thanks. You seem like a lovely guy too. And don’t let this girl get you down. You seem like an amazing person, you’ll find the girl you’re looking for. Sometimes in the strangest of ways,” you said as you got up.
