Rosalie

Rosalie breathed in the crisp fall air. This was her favorite time of year to be in her garden. You could still feel the warmth of the sun on your skin yet the air had a refreshing bite to it. In October she'd spend hours here, just to get some rare peace and quiet.

Technically, it was her mother's rose garden. Her mother had taken so much pride in it. It's where Rosalie got her name from. After her mother's death, the gardeners had continued to maintain the garden, but nobody loved it or spent time in it the way Elena Carrington had. At the age of eleven, Rosalie decided she'd adopt her mother's love for the garden.

Rosalie had just come from a brief meeting with Ms. Erin, the woman in charge of events at the palace. She'd been thrilled at Rosalie's enthusiasm for her new project, telling her to take the night to brainstorm ideas. They'd meet tomorrow morning to form a plan.

Rosalie hummed to herself, completely entranced by the thoughts swarming through her head. She didn't realize the sun had gone down slowly, that the temperature had dropped and there were now goosebumps covering the flesh of her arms and legs that was exposed by her dress.

She did, however, realize when her peace and quiet was suddenly interrupted by the shrill sound of sirens.

The kind that signal an attack on the palace.

Rosalie jumped up, looking around frantically, finally realizing that it was nearly dark, and that she was completely alone. She debated for a moment what to do. She was supposed to take refuge inside the safe room in the palace, but if she ran back to the palace, she risked being out in the open for a prolonged amount of time, an open target.

She decided to stay where she was, hidden away in the rose garden. It was off to the side of the palace property, away from the main grounds. Hopefully the location and the thick rose bushes would be enough to conceal her.

She sat, crouched down as tightly as she could, for a few moments, before she heard, accompanying the sound of the sirens, the sound of footsteps crunching nearby. They were deep and loud, like those from a man's boots. Each step caused her heart to thud heavily in her chest.

Rosalie stayed absolutely still as she heard the footsteps pass by her on the other side of the bush. Her heart hammering in her chest, she listened as they slowly started to fade. She breathed a sigh of relief.

And the footsteps stopped.

Rosalie cursed herself inwardly. How could she be so stupid? She listened as the footsteps slowly came towards her. When they were just on the other side of the bush, she heard the sound of a gun slowly cock.
