Branch's POV
Burdened. Weak. And Afraid. That's exactly how I felt as soon as I ran away from Poppy.
I couldn't believe that she still felt bad for me, even though she had Creek by her side all the time. I couldn't believe she was even allowed to escape to find me without getting caught by her father. I couldn't believe I lost Grandma to a horrible, blood-thirsty Bergen.
And I especially couldn't believe I lost my true colors. Forever.
Dispatched, I charged to the bottom of the Troll Tree. I wanted to escape my brutal life because I couldn't take it anymore. I had no family, no friends, and suffered tremendously from hatred, crime, and torture for the past couple of years.
As soon as I reached the bottom of the Troll Tree, I noticed something unbelievable.
A storm full of hungry Bergens surrounding me.
I didn't know what to do at that point. I was so frightened that I ran in circles around the tree so I wouldn't get caught.
But that didn't work as planned.
The same Bergen who killed my Grandma suddenly appeared before my eyes. With her tarnished hands, she grabbed me and opened her mouth.
Was I going to die?
