The cold stone walls of Jesse's cell started to feel like they were closing in on him. The groat itching his bare back and dirt staining his tattered black pants. His head was between his knees, his mind swimming with malicious thoughts. He kept his yellow eyes closed, the fear of the wolf taking over cloaking him in despair and darkness.
His arms squeezed his legs closer to his scarred chest and the chains around his wrists rattled on the ground. He took shallow breaths, as if to calm the suffocating walls around him. His naked torso shivered in the cold. Emptied of strength and hope the loneliness set in at high speed, wrapping its dark claws around his heart.
His ears twitches at the distant sound of footsteps, the clinking of keys. The person rounded the hallway and approached the thick, silver lined door of Jesse's prison.
Jesse took a small inhale and his eyes flashed open. Not lifting his head he looked up to see the attractive face of Darren Archon at the barred over window.
"What are you doing here," Jesse grunted out. Clearly he hasn't talked in a while from the gravely tone of his voice.
Darren's expression remained calm and collected. His striking blue eyes trained on the broken man before him. "I came to see you one on one. The last I'd seen of you you gave your pack a command to kill me."
"What, are you going to torture me to get answers like the other angels do or to just look at me and gloat."
"None of the above."
Jesse snorted and closed his vibrant eyes again, "then you're wasting my time."
Darren's eyebrows furrowed and he frowned, "what did they do to you." It was more to himself but loud enough to be heard.
Jesse lifted his head, a soft wince contorted his features as he leaned his head back. "What? Not the Jesse you remembered?" He looked down his nose as he straightened his legs, "sorry to disappoint."
Darren took a moment to respond. The words almost refusing to leave his throat. "Out of everyone...you were the one that hurt the most to lose..."
Jesse laughed incredulously, "Why? Because I could keep Belle safe when you weren't there?"
"No."
"Was it that she missed me and wasn't the same in bed," he smirked darkly.
Darren set his mouth in a firm line and grabbed the bars, "this isn't about Annabelle Jesse!"
"Oh...mad now Angel?"
He relaxed his grip but still hung on to the silver bar. "I'm not here to get angry or to pick a fight with you Jess."
At the use of his nickname Jesse's posture slumped slightly. "Then what Darren? What could have possibly happened to where you missed me?"
Darren looked down, "that's just it. Nothing. Nothing happened."
"You're confusing as shit you know that."
Darren chuckled lightly, "Sorry."
Jesse sat up and the scraping of the chains sounded in the small space.
"So...you still didn't answer me."
"I just missed you Jess."
"Why? You had Belle. Why would-"
"Jess for the last time this isn't about Belle," Darren's accented voice was soft but firm, wanting to get his point across.
He sighed and looked up, "I missed you. Not Belle. You."
Jesse leaned forwards, "why."
Darren opened his mouth but the words drowned in his throat again. He didn't think this would be this hard. He had always wanted to tell Jesse this. From the moment he came into his life he had brightened it in a way no one else could. Not even Belle.
Jesse caught on to the falter, "aren't you in love with her though?"
Darren breathed in deep, "not her."
Jesse's heart skipped a beat. If he wasn't in love with Belle then...
"I missed you Jess. More then I can put into words."
"But look at me Darren," his yellow eyes gleaming. "Look at me. Look what I've become."
"And you can change back just as quickly."
Jesse shook his head with a sarcastic smile, "it won't happen."
"Jess if you'd just-"
Jesse shot up to his feet, snarling, the chains clashing together and yanking his arms back. His strong muscles tightening, "What? Try? You don't think I have? You don't think I've hoped? Prayed? Longed for the day I could be a man again? Longed for the day I could fight with the heavens again? Fight with Dovakin, fight with Cyrim, Belle," his stance soften slightly, "you."
Darren swallowed.
"I've tried...everything. You don't know how much I want to break this..." he looked down at his hands then back at Darren, "this curse. But...I've given up. I can't keep doing it anymore. I can't keep hoping for it to just be crushed when it's in my reach. My well being just can't handle it anymore," tears brimmed his eyes, "I can't."
Darren took out the keys in his pocket as Jesse's frame slumped back against the wall, his palm on his face. He inserted the key into the lock and turned it over.
Jesse looked up, slight nervousness washing over his features. "What are you doing?"
"Trust me."
"Darren?"
He opened the door and took a few cautious steps inside.
"Don't."
"It's okay."
"N-no. I don't want to hurt you," he scrambled back to the farthest corner and sunk to the floor.
"You won't."
"You don't know that."
"I do. I trust you."
"You shouldn't."
Darren made it a couple feet away from him. Jesse's nose twitched and he shut his eyes, willing the bloodlust away as it started to surface again.
Darren was now a foot away from him, "shhh, I trust you."
Jesse kept his eyes shut, breathing heavy he shook his head, putting his hands over his ears.
Darren reached out his own hand and placed it on Jesse's. He flinched and bared his teeth slightly but Darren didn't back away. He gently lifted Jesse's hand away from his head and held it. "Look at me," he cocked his head a little to get a better look of Jesse's face. "Jess...look at me."
Jesse opened his eyes slowly and met Darren's gaze which was soft and affectionate. His deep ocean blues were sparkling. His black hair fell in his eyes and a smile tipped the edge of his mouth, making his handsome face even more gorgeous.
Jesse's tanned face tinted red but didn't look away.
"See? I'm not dead."
Jesse started to pull his lips into a small smile at the comment when Darren pressed his own against them. Jesse's eyes widened and he yanked his head away.
"What the hell!"
Darren released his hand, "I thought you were prepared."
"Prepared! How the hell am I suppose to prepare for that?"
Darren put his hands on his cheeks and kissed him again, must faster this time, like a peck. "Like that."
Jesse was flustered and stammered for words to say but their faces were so close together he shut his mouth and looked him in the eyes. No words were spoken as they slowly got closer and met lips again. At first Jesse was hesitant but feeling the Angel's soft skin he closed his eyes too and melted into it.
Their bodies molded together perfectly, bending and wrapping around each other. Jesse stood and Darren followed. The chains pulling on Jesse's wrists and he moved Darren in a 180. Pressing him up against the wall he ran his hands down his sides as Darren ran his fingers through his thick brown hair.
For a small moment Jesse forgot all the things he had done, all the lives he was haunted with. The wolf was finally silenced by the angel's love.
Darren bit Jesse's lip as he pulled away slightly and whispered, "I missed you."
Jesse kissed him again but he slowly started to realize how much he wanted more of him and how much he could lose himself.
He pulled away completely, both men breathing hard. Their tall frames still leaning over one another.
"We can't do this...we-we're in the middle of a war and Belle...Annie...no we j-just can't." He completely pulled away now.
Darren ran his hand through his hair, trying to fix it to a more neat manner but failed miserably. "Jess..." He wanted to tell him that it didn't matter, that what they were feeling was something that was worth more then the war or anything else but another part of him knew he was right. They were in a war and at the moment they were both enemies.
Jesse tilted his head down. "Go," he whispered. "Please...just...go."
Darren leaned down and softly put his hand on his bicep and kissed his cheek.
Jesse closed his eyes and breathed in.
"Have hope Jess. Don't give up. If not for you, at least for me." He looked his face up and down then let him go, walking to the door.
Darren looked over his shoulder at Jesse's body in the same position and sighed. He shut the door and locked it again, his heart sinking as the lock engaged.
Jesse fell to his knees as a tear fell down his face. The sound of receding footsteps resounded in his ears. His heart yearned to call him back, to feel his protective touch, but he looked at his hands and remembered the blood that was on them. He made fists and curled them towards his stomach, more tears streaming down his cheeks as he leaned over in fetal position. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
