Even if I didn't want to get anymore people involved in this whole thing, I still decided to call up Cole and Mya. I wasn't as close with Eli and Abby, so I decided to keep them out of it.
Cole and Mya were both able to meet me at my house after hearing how distressed and panicky I was. Mya was actually at Cole's house when I called, so they were able to get here quickly.
I sped my way back to my house to grab my backpack. I filled it with anything I thought would be useful. A pocket knife (and a another that I kept in my jacket pocket), portable chargers, snacks, my wallet, and water bottles. I also threw in Tyler's blanket.
"How much longer until we get there, Mya?" I asked from the backseat. Cole was driving his car, Mya was in the passenger seat, and I was in the backseat on Cole's side. My throbbing head was leaning against the cold window, slowing erasing my second headache of the day. I flipped my phone in my hands, anxiously.
"Two hours." She answered, glancing at the time on the GPS. It was 3 AM.
We had been in the car for an hour and a half. Of course, the place Tyler was presumably taken to was almost 4 hours away. The man who took him must've taken Tyler right after I got done talking to Grandma on the phone.
"Can we stop for food?" Complained Mya, throwing her arms in the air.
I gasped, throwing myself between the driver and passenger seats. "No! We have to get to Tyler!"
"Ann," Cole eyed me through the rear-view mirror. As I slowly sat back down in my seat, I noticed Mya eyeing my seatbelt. I rolled my eyes out of annoyance, while buckling it into place. We haven't passed another car in more than half an hour now. "We should've just gotten the police involved."
"Yes," Mya agreed, nodding. "They would've taken care of the whole situation."
I sat there, astonished. A small part of me understood what they were saying. Once I realized I couldn't (shouldn't, rather) do this on my own, maybe I should have gotten the police involved instead of my friends. Then again, maybe they don't know what they're talking about. I had to do this. I had to get my brother back. Not the police. Me...right?
The man still hasn't been answering my messages or calls. I needed to see how Tyler was. I needed to know he was okay.
"Maybe we should still call the police." Mya suggested.
"No," I said. "I'm going to find my brother."
"Ann, this is beyond you. The police are more skilled in these types of situations. We," Cole looked over at Mya. "Your best friends, don't want you to get hurt."
I rolled my eyes again and let out of breath I didn't know I was holding. I wasn't going to listen to them. I was going to get Tyler back.
Suddenly, the car stopped. I was flung forward, but pulled back by the seatbelt.
"What the fuck?"
"We're going home." Cole said, putting the car in reverse.
I looked to Mya and she stayed silent, looking away from me.
"You said you'd help me before we left! We only have a few hours to get there." I argued back.
Cole stopped the car and turned to me. "Ann, listen to me. This is insane! A crazy man who can somehow see you and says that 'you're the only one who can save Jack'," He said in air quotes. "kidnapped your brother for an unknown reason. The police or the fucking FBI need to take care of this. You don't even know someone named Jack!"
I was shocked. I looked over at Mya for any kind of help, who just looked at me and nodded. "He's right."
"You know what?" I threw off my seatbelt and snatched my backpack off the floor. I zipped up my phone in my jacket pocket as I opened the door. "I'm walking there if you won't take me." I slide out of the car and ran down the side of the road.
