The scene was sweet. Well, it would have been, if not for the circumstances. One boy held the other around the waist. The other rested his head on the firsts shoulder. He seemed tired, possibly straight up exhausted. Upon closer inspection, though, the whole thing became darker. Jack Kelly, the first boy sang very softly to his boyfriend. Crutchie, the second boy, was dying in Jacks arms. "Please, God, I ain't never asked for nothing before. But please, please, please, let Crutchie live this out. He's only seventeen- he ain't even grown yet. He got too much left to do to end it now. Please." His prayer was silent so he wouldn't worry the boy he held up. Tears flowed from Jacks brown eyes and his heart moved one hundred miles an hour. Crutchies seemed to be slowing by the minute.
In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me.
This wasn't a sweet moment, it was the last. Much too poor to afford medical care of any sort, Jack had really just let it run its course, lying to Crutchie and hoping it would work out. Of course, it didn't. They had just gotten things together, worked out an apartment, both gotten solid jobs, then everything went to shit. Jack was gonna propose. Guess not.
When I awake my poor heart pains.
Jack had figured, from what he'd read, that Crutchie had something called Post-Polio-Syndrome. (A/N this is a real thing. It's basically polio again, after you get better, but worse and in different parts of your body. For this assume its in his brain and paralyses his whole body.) Jack was nearly through with his song. Crutchie was nearly done with his life. The small boys head lolled to a side, and his body slipped in Jacks arms. Jack managed to catch the small figure, but his stomach dropped. This was it.
So when you come back and make me happy.
The whole idea hadn't sunk in, but this was it. Jack was never gonna see his best friend of 7 years alive again.
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take the blame.
His heart started cracking in two. He wanted to die. If he could be with him, it would be so worth it. He would have taken all the pain Crutchie felt in those moments, in his whole life, if it meant Crutchie would get better and make it. He didn't have a life here. The boy dying in his arms was his life in this city. The city would be so gray, so boring without the love of his life in it.
You make me happy, when skies are gray.
He would never see his smile, never hear his voice ever again for as long he was alive. They had shared so many moments together. The rooftop, the bridge to Brooklyn, and the alleys and streets that cane alive when Crutchie strolled on to them.
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you.
Crutchie's body dropped to the ground. Jack couldn't hold him up anymore. He put the smaller boys head in his lap, and cried. He watched the life begin to fade behind Crutchies big, brown eyes. "Please stay. Please." Jacks voice broke on the last word. Crutchie reached up a touched Jacks face. "I love you, Jacki."
Please don't take my sunshine away.
"I love you more." He spoke to air. His sunshine was gone. His Crutchie was gone.
