"Bye Tamara!"
Tamara waved at the little girl exiting the café with her mother, a small smile forming on her face. It was funny. No matter how many times she went through hell at school, the small shop would always manage to lift her spirits. Maybe it was the fact that the people here treated her with respect, unlike the people at her school. Or maybe it was the smell of her favorite cappuccino that always drifted around the room. Or just the customers that reminded her that there was still some good in humanity. Whatever it was, she really didn't care. As long as nothing would change, she was perfectly fine with it.
Dominique walked up beside the young girl and examined the room filled with satisfied customers before cracking a smile. "It seems that anytime you're here, business is always booming."
Tamara turned to give the young woman a blank look before shrugging. "I have no idea. I'm just the cashier."
The smile that had formed on Dominique's face fell to a frown at the young girl's response. It would always send a pang through her heart when she spoke badly of herself. It was because she knew the girl had tons of potential and lots of the customers could see it also – but it seemed that the teen couldn't see it herself. Yet nothing Dominique said would make her change her mind. She walked away in silence, leaving the teen confused. What did she say wrong?
'I always manage to mess up something,' she thought. 'No wonder everyone hates me.'
"I don't hate you. But then again, I don't even know you," an unfamiliar voice stated, mumbling the last part a bit. Tamara mentally scolded herself at the fact that she had said her thoughts out loud before glancing at the person that had made the comment. Before her stood a lean boy with black hair and crystal blue eyes that sparkled with curiosity and joy. He looked around her age and wore a black tee shirt with camouflage shorts and a pair of white sneakers. A smile stretched across his face as Tamara glared and examined him closely.
"I really didn't ask," she snapped. The boy leaned in and tapped a finger on her nose.
"Geez, be happy I even answered, Ms. Gloom."
Tamara swiped away the young boy's hand before crossing her arms over her chest. "Screw you. What do you want?"
"I'm not here to order anything. I'm actually here for a job interview. My name is Jake by the way."
"And you're telling me this why?"
"You know, just in case we become working partners. So, what's your name Ms. Gloom?"
Tamara looked at him hesitantly before giving him her name. "Look, I don't mean to seem rude but I just have good history with people."
She grimaced after, hating that she had to apologize. It wasn't exactly her favorite thing to do.
"Don't worry. I'm sure you've had a rough day," Jake reassured with a smile. His eyes drifted upward. "Oh! There's Dominique."
Tamara turned to see the tall woman signaling the teen boy before her to come over. He walked around the counter towards her and the two stepped into the woman's office. Tamara stared after the door for a few seconds before focusing back on the cash register.
'I wonder how work will be with Jake here. He'll attract the attention of tons of school girls, that's for sure.' She thought. 'Wait, did I really just think that?'
"Excuse me miss?" A patiently waiting customer asked, snapping Tamara out of her trance.
She smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry ma'am. May I take your order?"

After about an hour, Jake finally walked out Dominique's office. A large smile was plastered on his face as he tapped Tamara on her shoulder. She turned to face him, only for him to grab her hand and shake it.
"It's gonna be nice working here with you, partner." He said. Tamara rolled her eyes before pulling her hand away from him.
"Sure. First rule of the job: don't touch me," she scowled.
"When did Ms. Gloom come back?"
"She never left." Tamara shoved a pad and pen into Jake's hands before walking around the counter. She rested her arm on it and smirked at the boy, who gave her a confused look.
"My shift is finished so have fun taking over, partner." She teased, winking at the last word before exiting the shop. Jake looked down at the contents in his hands and then at the door again.
He smirked. "Well this'll be interesting."

Tamara took a deep breath as she walked down the hall. Thankfully, her school allowed students to leave during lunch so she had made it back just in time for classes to start. She stepped into her next class, where the heads of students shot up and their eyes stayed locked on her. Most of the looks were glares while others just stared in surprise and curiosity. The attention that she had always hated receiving was now on her once again and probably worse than ever before. A sigh escaped her lips as she headed for her seat and just as the teacher had began teaching, whispers of the events that occurred at lunch began to fill her ears.
She frowned. "Well this'll be interesting."
