Chapter 1
“Ready? 5, 6, 7, 8!” The teacher yelled, clapping her hands with each count.
I contracted to the floor, rolling onto my back just to lift myself into a sitting position. The music picked up speed along with the dance moves. I followed the other girls as we ran into a circle. I slipped into the middle, hidden by the other girls dancing around me. They kept me hidden until I had developpé d my leg in second position. As soon as it was fully extended by my ear, the music suddenly died, the girls falling to the floor around me in the silence. This was one of the times when my flexibility came in handy.
I held my leg in the air, my arms straight out to the sides, until the drum beat hit and the music picked up again. That’s when I fell to the ground and joined back into the choreography while another girl did her solo. We all stopped at the same spot, not having anymore choreography to perform.
“That was very good. Melanie, make sure to make each move sharp. It’s an intense dance after all.” Ms. Julian said, waving a hand to dismiss us.
I ran a hand through my bright red wavy hair, pulling it over my shoulder to braid it. It was naturally dark brown, but I had dyed it cherry red a few weeks ago. I definitely stood out in a crowd now.
“Have I told you your extension is amazing?” My best friend Danielle laughed as she sat in front of me on the wooden floor.
I rolled my dark green eyes at her. “Yes, Dani. Every time I do a dance with extensions in it.”
“Be proud of it, babe. Some agents look for that.”
“Sure, but sometimes I feel like it’s all I have going for me.”
Danielle rolled her eyes. “It’s official; you are mental.”
I giggled, getting to my feet. “Whatever. Don’t you have a date with Liam or something?”
“Oh, shoot! I forgot! Thanks, Kora!” She jumped up and hugged me, giving me a kiss on the cheek. “I’ll see you back at the flat in a few hours. Don’t get lost in London!”
I watched as she grabbed all of her dance gear before she waved to everyone and bolted out of the studio. I laughed to myself, shaking my head. Sometimes I swear that girl wouldn’t know where she was going without me.
Despite Dani being twenty-three and me being sixteen, we were the best of friends. You see, I moved out to London from New York a year ago to follow my dance career. My specialties are contemporary and pointe, but I can do pretty much any styles you throw at me. Except tap, I can’t tap worth a flip.
Anyway, when I moved out here I knew absolutely nobody. I had to stay in the attic of the dance school I was attending at the time because I couldn’t afford a place of my own, nor could I legally live by myself. Nobody knew I was staying in the attic until one day this girl named Danielle Peazer caught me coming down the stairs for rehearsal. She pretty much insisted I move in with her and we’d been best friends ever since.
I headed back to the locker room, grabbing my change of clothes and heading to the shower. After I got cleaned up and was dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and black tank top with my favorite coral and white striped cardigan over it, I grabbed my red Toms and my dance bag and left. I practically hopped out of the studio as I struggled to slip my shoes on my feet. Yeah, it probably would have been smarter to put them on in the dressing room.
Once I finally made it out of the building (in one piece, thank goodness), I paused on the sidewalk, scanning the cars parked along the street.
“That jerk…” I mumbled, noting that my boyfriend was nowhere in sight. He promised he would pick me up today.
With a huff, I slipped my white Ray Bans on and marched down the sidewalk. I can’t believe he forgot again! That little-
A car horn honked behind me.
I glanced over my shoulder to see Riley pulling up to the sidewalk.
He rolled down his window. “Hey, babe!”
I turned to face him, placing my hands on my hips and glaring at him through my sunglasses. “Don’t ‘hey babe’ me.”
His brows furrowed. “What’s wrong?”
“Seriously? This is the third time you’ve forgotten about me! That doesn’t include the two times you didn’t show up at all.”
“Kora, come on. I didn’t forget about you today, I was just a little late.”
“A little late? I got done an hour ago! Luckily I went ahead and showered or else I would have been standing out here waiting. You can’t keep doing this. I might get mugged or something.”
He rolled his eyes at me. “Kor, you won’t get mugged. So what if I’m late? It’s not like you have anything else to do.”
My jaw dropped. “That’s besides the point, Riley! I’m your freaking girlfriend and I asked you if you would please pick me up today because Dani had a date and it’s a bit scary to walk half way across the city to my flat. I’ve only lived here not even a full year and most of that time has been spent at the studio or my flat. I don’t know my way around that well.”
“Kora,” he sighed. “I think you’re overreacting.”
“It’d be overreacting if this was the first time this has happened, but it’s not. I’m walking home.”
“Kora Elizabeth Benson, get back here.”
“Funny, you haven’t bothered to get out of the car once. Something tells me you won’t be following me anywhere.”
I turned to leave, but his voice stopped me.
“Maybe I just tired of chauffeuring you around everywhere!”
My temper spiked. “Excuse me? You don’t take me anywhere. Danielle takes me anywhere I need to go or I walk. I hardly ever ask you to drive me because your always so freaking late.”
“You’re such a drama queen!” He groaned, leaning back against his seat.
“This coming from the king of drama himself.”
“You know what? Fine. Walk home. I don’t care. Get mugged if you want to.”
I glared at him as he rolled up his window. I considered flipping him off, but decided I was better than that and just continued my walk down the street.
Well, this week was off to a freaking great start, don’tcha think?
