BANG.
I awoke with a start to the deafening crash downstairs. Groggily I sat up in bed and looked at the blinding light that was my alarm clock.
It read 3 AM, dead on the dot.
Though still waking up from being in a deep sleep, dread quickly dominated my body.
3 AM.
The Devil's Hour.
Knowing that I was the only living thing in my house, I knew that something other worldly was beneath my feet. I slowly rise out of my bed and place my feet silently on the cold wooden floor of my bedroom, not wanting to alert whatever was below to my presence. Opening the secret compartment under my bed, I grab the handle of the stainless steel katana and pull it out. The dread inside my body intensified as I felt the ultra sharp blade in the palm of my hand.
CLANK.
I jumped, and closed my hand so fast I nearly cut myself from holding the katana. Gathering what courage was left, I slowly walked toward the door and opened it, unfortunately making a creaking sound as the hinges moved. I stood still, listening for any scuffling or movement. The only thing I did hear was my hammering heart in my chest. After waiting a minute, I walked out of the doorway and headed for the stairs. Once I was at the top, I stepped down carefully, trying to make as little noise as possible.
THUNK.
Half-way down, the handle of my katana hit the wall, and silently cursing myself, I sense something watching me from across the living room. Slowly turning my head, I look towards it, squinting. Barely being able to see, I walk down the remaining steps, and when my eyesight improved, creened my head again.
What I saw made my stomach churn.
