Being Olivia West

Date

I race home on my bike. I run inside, change into pink high-waisted lace shorts, a plain crop top and studded sneaker wedges. I quickly braid my hair, do my makeup and pack my bag before running out the door.

I text Anna to let her know I'll be coming by soon. I swing by her place and we quickly walk to school.

"Sorry I was late. There was an emergency with Beth" I explain what happened at Beth's house to Anna. When I finish telling her we've already reached the office door.

The rest of the day goes by in some kind of blur. Boring classes, crowded halls, the sort of things you won't remember in a week. As I'm walking out of the school I see Jack Simpson. I try to hide behind somebody as I walk past him but he noticed me. He starts walking beside me!

"Hey" he says to me. I cannot believe this is happening!

"Hey!" I smile at him, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

"You're Olivia West, right?" He asks me coolly.

"Yup, that's me!" I say back to him. He nods casually.

"I've heard a lot about you" he tells me. I blink.

"Good things or bad things?" I ask him seriously.

"Don't worry, only good things" he laughs. I laugh too.

"So, what's up?" I ask. He smiles at me nervously.

"Well, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out later." Oh. My. God. Is this real, or am I dreaming?

"Yeah, sure! That would be cool!" I smile at him, trying to sound casual, but in my mind I'm screaming YES YES YES YES YES!

"Cool! So what would you think about Menchies later, around 5:00?" He asks me.

"Awesome! See you later I guess!" I grin at him and he smiles back.

"Great. Bye Olivia!" He says.

"Bye Jack!" I call over my shoulder. I am in shock right now. OMG!

At 4:30 I start to get ready for my date with Jack. I change into a casual pink flowery dress and my white Converse. I pull my hair out of the braid and let it hang loose around my face. For my makeup I apply a thinner coat of mascara, a pinkish gold eyeshadow, eyeliner and peach lipgloss. I look in the mirror and smile. I'm going on a date with Jack Simpson! I text all my friends: I'M GOING TO MENCHIES WITH JACK!!! The replies I get back are mainly just heart emojis and exclamation points. At 4:45 I spray on my favorite scent from Victoria's Secret and walk downstairs. I walk into the kitchen and see my mom doing a jigsaw puzzle with Cameron.

"Mom, I'm going to Menchies" I inform her.

"Ok honey. Who are you going with?" She asks me without looking up from the puzzle. I hesitate before replying.

"Oh, uh, just a guy from school" I say casually. Cam's head whips up. I can see the smirk on his face.

"Ooh Olivia has a boyfriend!" He taunts. I roll my eyes at him. I pull on a light denim jacket before waving at my mom and heading out the door.

After a 10 minute walk I arrive at Menchies. Right before I pull the door open I feel a buzz. I pull my phone out of my pocket. There is a text from Anna: GOOD LUCK! I smile as I pull the door handle. Inside, Menchies is crowded with people. I takes me a minute before I spot Jack. He is wearing straight-legged khaki pants, a white shirt and a gray varsity jacket. His light brown hair is swooped up, showing off his chocolate brown eyes. He smiles when he sees me.

"Wow, Olivia, you look beautiful" I blush.

"Thanks Jack. You don't look bad yourself!" I smile at him. He grins back. We get our frozen yogurt. Mine is watermelon flavored topped with fresh fruit and candy and Jack gets chocolate yogurt with brownies, chocolate sauce, sprinkles and chocolate chips. I lift my eyebrows and smile when I see what he got.

"Okay, I'm going to take a guess and say that you like chocolate" I smile at him and he smiles back. When we reach the cashier, Jack pays without objections.

"Aw, thanks for paying Jack" I say as he hands me my yogurt. We find a quiet table outside and he pulls my chair out for me. He sits down in the other chair. We talk and laugh as we eat our yogurt, and by the time we're done the sky is turning dark. I stand up from my chair. Jack stands up too.

"Well, I should probably go now" I say, throwing the empty bowls in the garbage. Jack frowns.

"It's getting pretty dark now, maybe I should walk you home." He offers. I smile at him.

"Okay, that'd be fine" I say as we start to walk away from Menchies.

We turn on to Davie Road, which is only 3 blocks away from my house.

"Thank you so much for tonight, Jack. I had a really great time" I say to him. He grins at me.

"I had a good time too. Do you want to get together another time?" He asks me. I am screaming on the inside!

"Yeah, I'd like that" I smile as we turn on to Oak Road-my street-and walk towards my house. He follows me right to the front door. We stop on the doormat. I turn and face him.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow I guess" I say with a smile. He grins.

"Tomorrow it is. Oh, wait! What's your number so we can talk?" He asks me. He hands me his phone and I punch my phone number into his contacts.

"There you go" I give him his phone back. He shoves it in his pocket.

"Thanks again, Jack" I say. Before I'm even aware of what I'm doing, I wrap my arms around him. At first he is tense, then he relaxes. I pull away and I see his smile.

"Bye, Jack" I say as I slip my key into the door.

"See you, Olivia" he calls over his shoulder as he walks back down the path.

I push the door open, walk inside and look at the clock: 7:45 pm. My mom is upstairs working and Cam is at soccer practice so I walk into my room and change into sweat pants and a tank top. I do my homework then I go downstairs to watch TV. While I'm laying on the couch I decide to call Anna. I spend the rest of the night recounting the date to all my different friends, including Alec. I thought he would be mad that I went on a date, but instead he was just happy for me! That was a relief. Later that night I fall asleep, dreaming of Jack Simpson.
