Broken Promises

“But you promised”

My quiet voice was oddly loud against the silent night.

“You promised you wouldn’t leave. You said you would always be here. I thought I didn’t have to worry anymore.”

I felt the steady flow of hot tears stream down my face.

“You told me to forget what happened. You taught me to be strong.”

I sniffled and rubbed my damp cheeks, clearing away the tears, but more just covered them.

"I thought, for once, finally something was going my way. But nothing can last, now can it?" I laughed bitterly against the cold night. "No." I said sharply. "Of course not”

"Everything has to go away just when it feels right. And you thought you would join all of those people and things and go, too. Is that right? Well forget it. I will be strong. I won't dwell on the past." I tried to be strong. I built up a barrier so no one would get in. I told myself I would be okay alone, with no one to comfort me when I’m being pushed to the edge.

But still, it hurt.

Every painful moment alone was another stabbing realization that from then on, it would always be that way. Every silent second was terrible because I didn’t have you to spend it with. Every waking day was another one in the depths of depression and anxiety.

“I thought we could make it through, together. I thought, while everyone was losing people they loved, somehow, someway, we would always have each other. I never imagined losing you.”

Everything was lost. It was over. I was done.

“But now you’re gone.”
