(Kailynn)
I wake up with a sweat covered forehead and my pillow damp. To top it all off I had a killer headache. I lifted my body into a sitting position with a groan. The last couple of things I remember were fighting with Xander and then working out, seeing Xander get knocked out by Ash, finally, and then getting carried to my bunk.
What an eventful night I guess. I pulled my hand through my tangle hair and attempted to make myself look presentable. I heard a deep cough down a couple of bunks and then silent whispering.
"-She will have to do it whether she likes it or not." a familiar voice echoed. Were they talking about me? "Well I'm not a woman expert or anything but I'm pretty sure she won't want to go find that prick." another familiar voice was heard.
I shuffled to my feet, pulling on my grey converse and throwing on a light black jacket. I neared towards the voices and ducked down next to an empty bunk. "It doesn't matter! She is going to do it! I don't care if you have to drag her out with you but she will do it, I am not letting one of our best combat trainers get hurt, do you understand?" a grumbly voice barged in.
okay, yep they were talking about me for sure. I felt a tingly vibe course through my body and up towards my nose. Oh crap I'm about to sneeze. I quickly plugged my nose as the voices became silent. I let go and luckily I didn't make a noise but of course at the last second boom.
The loud sound echoed past the voices and past the bunks and probably where everyone could hear. My cover was blown. "Kailynn..." my eyes went wide and I tried to very quietly back away. Three heads popped out of the corner and I cringe. Why me?
"Kailynn, come out we need to talk." that voice was Xander's. He grabbed my arm and pulled me around the corner where the light above us was flickering. Underneath that light stood Renee and Tobin.
"Listen, we need you to go with Xander to find Ash." Renee said with a stern look on her face. Then Tobin started talking before I could say anything.
"She is out looking for Mason and we heard her trying to contact you on your walkie talkies." I crinkled my brow in confusion. My walkie talkie? They went through my stuff?!
"You went through my stuff?!" I voiced my thoughts. I was getting mad. first of all I didn't want to go with Xander to get Ash because he's an ass and second of all They have no right at all to be going through my stuff! Then somebody shushed me and I was still glaring at Tobin.
"Kailynn we are sending you with Xander for Ash's safety. She said that Mason had her locked up in his apartment about three miles away." Renee replied. I nodded softly and looked at Xander. He looked back down at me, considering he was reasonably taller than me, and shrugged.
"I guess this is first mission in training right?" he said with a cheeky smile.
-*-*-*-*-
"I still can't believe you went through my stuff. Like ewe you perv." I silently groaned. He rolled his eyes and scoffed. We were halfway across town trying to figure out where Mason and Ash were. So far we haven't found any clues but I had an idea of where to find someone to talk to.
"For the record, I didn't go through your stuff. It was laying on your nightstand and it was ringing so I answered It." he shrugged like it was no big deal. All around us were tall big buildings that towered over us like giants. I was afraid to move too much in fear that they would come crashing down.
Everything around us was like special artifacts that could and would be broken in an instant. Glass and broken cars were spread out everywhere and people were walking around with rangy clothes and no place to live. I leaned closer to Xander and whispered.
"Those are the people who lost their homes when the power killers paraded through the city and burned almost everything." he nodded knowingly and pulled up his sleeve to reveal a watch that was cracked halfway across the face. The time showed 7:43 which meant we only had two hours to find Ash until all the light from the sun disappeared behind the trees and we wouldn't be able to see.
A few dogs that were all bones and skin waddled across the streets. Many people around us were crying and trying to find food and water. I felt bad because here I was walking around perfectly fine while the others around me were practically dying.
I looked away not wanting to see any more. "Excuse me sweetheart?" an old man came up to me and I stopped dead in my tracks, Xander not far behind. I looked at the man. He had two teeth left and when he spoke spit flew out of his mouth.
I tried not to sound grossed out when I said, "Yes, sir?" he inched closer and I could feel Xander come to my side. The old man motioned me to lean down so he could whisper something in my ear and I obeyed. Instead of whispering anything he yanked my arm and pulled me out of the street toward an alley way.
I gasped and screamed not knowing what else to do. I pulled away from the old man's grasp and ran backwards into Xander. I gasped again and Xander hugged me to his chest.
"Kailynn, are you alright?" he whispered comfortingly in my ear. I just nodded and pulled away and looked towards the old man again. He was chuckling and I grimaced.
"Be careful sweetheart. It's a cold world out there. Don't trust anyone." and then with that, he disappeared into the alley without another word. I felt the tears prick my eyes and I vigorously rubbed them away before anyone saw.
I looked up towards Xander before asking, "Why didn't you help me?" he shook his head and slung an arm over my shoulder and took a few steps forward. I followed suit and we walked side by side.
"Because I knew you wouldn't need my help Kailynn." I blinked, once, twice, then three times and didn't say a word. The old man's words replayed in my head, Don't trust anyone.
Could I trust Xander?
