"Aurora! Five of these bottles are empty! Are you even trying today?!" Dad seemed to be in a bit of a slump sense his new star player didn't seem to be flowing very well with the original team.
"I'm working on it! Lyle just hurt his ankle, maybe if you got your trainer down here I would have time to do my job!" Our medical trainer was only part time due to the fact that she has college the other half. It was though, not only her job but mine too, I guess team manager means, being a nurse, a water bottle filler, a practice equipment setter upper, and a drill example for each of the guys.
"Aurora Ray Holt, you will not sass me young lady or you can kiss a cappella camp goodbye!" He glared at Lyle before turning his attention back to Jacob and the rest of our starting offense. A Cappella summer boot camp was something our school's choir director put on every year and it was an invite only kind of thing. The a cappella team at Seaview is probably the most competitive in the state and is incredibly hard to get into. When I got a call a couple of weeks ago requesting I go to this camp made me so happy. happier then when we won the championship in '08.
"Sorry about uh this." Lyle murmurs gesturing at his ankle. He looked really distracted and not quite on point. I propped his leg up on my knee while I finished wrapping it up with ACE bandage.
"It's not your fault, I'm gonna have to talk with Walls about maybe not tackling our starting QB so hard" He smiles and laughs a little before taking his foot off my knee.
"So you had classes with blonde beauty over there?" I turned to see Jacob throw his helmet on the field and dive into the endzone. I nodded and before I could say anything he spoke again, "He hasn't tried to make any moves on you has he?"
Well that came out of nowhere. "No not really, he called me prettier then Lati in first period." Lyle's hands crumpled into fists, and he turned to glare at Jacob. "And he tried to call me Cinder in fifth period and I told him only you were allowed to call me that." I reached over and ruffled up his hair which caused the fists to automatically unclench.
"I'll talk to him, he needs to know his place." His place? What on earth is that supposed to mean? "If he causes you any more trouble come find me ok?" Lyle stared at me waiting for a response.
"I mean he didn't do anything wrong, he called me pretty. Most girls would consider that a compliment." Lyle spat on the turf. and avoided my gaze.
"Yeah, well, uh, I mean yeah you are really pretty and um nice and awesome and amazing and stuff, but he just can't, not now, cause I'm really close and uh." He finished his voice just above a whisper as if he was thinking out loud.
"Close to what?"
"Nothing, sorry I got to go play now or coach will notice."
