My favorite, hot cup of Starbucks coffee gave me no relief in the harsh winter. My pinky finger is frosted, poking out of the old hole in my glove. I trudged through the gray slush, my feet were frozen despite the ten-year-old snow boots. Pausing to take a deep breath, I watched my brief pants condense in the cold air. A memory flashed, one with me and my beloved, our lips rosy as we kept on whispering air to the night. Slowly, there was something hot on my cheeks, hotter than my coffee. Rubbing my hand hastily across my face, my foot slipped on the pavement.
I screamed as I struck another human, coffee flying everywhere, several apologies ready at the tip of my chapped lips. I didn't fall on the grimy pavement, but it hurt. My ribs were aching, from my heartbeats. Similar, brown eyes stared right back at me.
"Mother?"
My flesh, his face.
