She stared out of the window, looking at the trees as the car drove by them. The car started to move slower and stopped in front of a big white house. A woman with short dark brown hair and black framed glasses climbed out of the car. She was a young beautiful woman probably in her thirties. She patiently walked up the steps in front of the house and knocked twice. The door quietly opened and on the other side was a woman with long red hair. She smiled and with a gentle voice told het to come in. They both sat across from each other in the living room.
"Kathryn Nemec, your references are outstanding. Fluent in Italian, French, German and Russain. Most of your charges appear to have been in various diplomatic core". She stood in front of Kathryn and read her file. "I enjoy traveling". Kathryn replied.
She then sat down in front of her again and continued."You attended medical school at North Western and yet you decided not to continue, may I ask why?" "Human anatomy was my waterloo, the cadavers...". "Yes, gruesome?". "No, I found them compelling. Much more interesting than our living patients. I decided it will be healthier to reorient my efforts from the end of life to its beginning". The woman just kept on looking down at the file. "Thus a master's degree in child development?". "There's no vocation more critical than raising a child. It's my belief one can't be over qualified". Kathryn said with a pleased and gentle voice.
"This job will not be without its challenges. I have no interest in abdicating my role as a mother. While I'm in this house I will be responsible tending to Masha's needs. You and Masha will join me whenever you can, there will be times where I will be unencumbered". Kathryn stared at her for a few seconds and then replied her. "So my primarily duty will be to care for the child?". "While I'm gone yes..." "and while you're here?"
The woman, katarina Rostova, looked down for a moment and then stood up and walked to the fire place and sat on the chair placed closer to Kathryn. "You will have one job and that is to discreetly observe our interactions and during my absence, I will expect you to provide a continuity of care. The way I dress her, hold her, change her, bathe her. You will be what I am to her. With one exceprion..." "Yes?" she asked quickly with a question mark clearly visible on her face. " You will not love her".
