chapter one

I'm in the middle of a fight with a stranger right now and as I'm fighting, song lyrics popped into my head.

And the blood will dry,

underneath my nails,

I took a deep breath as he raised his fist and tried to hit my face again. Right as I was exhaling the deep breath, the next line came to me,

And the wind will rise up, to fill my sails,

The fight kept going with all of the drunken man's buddies cheering him on, yelling at me to not bite of more than I could chew. The next couple lines came to mind,

And you can doubt,

And you can hate,

but I know,

no matter what it takes,

I'm coming home,

I'm coming home,

I wanted to laugh out loud at the irony of my minds idea of humour, but thought better of it when my opponents fist got dangerously close to my nose. A few more minutes pass and his drunken friends slowly lost interest in the fight when neither one of us went down. Finally, the man lowered his fists and said the two words I loved hearing: You win. I did a little happy dance and gladly held out my hand, awaiting my reward from the man. He sighed and pulled out a severely wrinkled fifty dollar bill from his pocket and placed it in my out stretched hand. He turned and walked back into the bar. Right as the door swung closed, thunder cracked across the sky and I carefully moved out of the alley, looking around the corners before pulling my severely over-sized sweater on  and pulling an old, stretched out beanie over my extremely curly, dark auburn coloured  hair.

let the rain wash away,

all the pain of yesterday,

and though my kingdom awaits,

and has forgiven my mistakes,

The next lines, hmmm, how similar to my life right now. I illegally fight at night to release pent up aggression, only to lead a double life and be the perfect citizen the following morning. Walking down the street, I started planning exactly what I would do, and how long it would take me.

I'm coming home,

I'm coming home,

tell the world that I'm coming, home,

After about three minutes, I felt like someone was following me, and as I looked at my watch, I nearly stopped walking altogether! My fights never take that long! Forty seven minutes! Forty seven minutes! Seriously! I had unconsciously started to run while I was mentally chewing myself out for wasting all of that time that I could have used to, umm.... Well, I don't really know what I would do with all the extra time, but I'm sure I would have thought of something! Right? Right.

Still far away,

from where I belong,

I looked around and inwardly groaned. I was almost a mile and a half from my apartment! I shivered when a cold wind blew across the street, dragging behind trees forgotten leaves, dragging them across the cracked pavement, the sound calling to your heart, making you crave home where you could sit in a corner with a blanket with a warm cup of... something.

now it's always darkest,

before the dawn,

The moon was gone tonight, and the city officials haven't bothered with street lights on this side of town, seeing as no one important ever reached this side.

but you can doubt,

And you can hate,

but I know,

No matter what it takes,

The feeling of being followed was still ever present in my mind, and I quickly decided to end this and stopped running, glad that years of fighting kept me in a good shape.

I'm coming home,

I'm coming home,

tell the world that I'm coming home,

"What do you want?! I really have to get going, like now, so of you're going to rob me, do you think you could maybe, I don't know wait until tomorrow? I'll even put you into my schedule if you really wanted, that way I won't forget about you?" When no one answered, I huffed and returned to walking. That's what I thought! I thought to myself. In this half of the town, you had to be able to hold your own, or get out. Tough but fair.

let the rain,

wash away,

all the pain of yesterday,

and though my kingdom awaits,

and they've forgiven my mistakes,

I'm coming home,

A light sprinkling of rain had started to fall, quickly coating the the streets in a dark grey colour. After another ten minutes of so, I could finally make out my apartment building in the distance, and quickly hurried my walking.

I'm coming home,

tell the world that I'm coming,

I'm coming home I'm coming home,

tell the world that I'm coming home,

The light sprinkle soon turned to a heavy down pour of sorts, but I embraced the cold shocks the rain gave me. Like the song, I was letting the rain wash all of my pain away, at least until tomorrow.

let the rain,

wash away, all the pain of yesterday,

And though my kingdom awaits,

And they've forgiven my mistakes,

I'm coming home,

I finally walked through the doors and up the three flights of stairs to my apartment. I unlocked the door and walked in, kicking the door closed, turning on a lamp that sat on a side table, and simultaneously shrugging out of my now soaking sweater and squelching tennis shoes. I walked into the kitchen and placed a kettle of water of the stove to boil for tea, when two arms quickly made their way over my mouth and my eyes as a gruff voice whispered in my ear, "I don't think you need to pencil me in, seeing as I can just come after hours." The strangers hands roughly ran down my body, stopping at certain parts, if you know what I mean, and he wasn't very gentle. "Now, if you behave, stay quiet, and don't put up a fight, I'll be nice and only let half of my friends have their turn when I'm done with you. Deal?"
