Gwen was in the middle of an activity, and David was never one to interrupt. So that's why it shocked the kids when he did.
"Gwen." He came into the mess hall from the counselor's cabin, voice hushed and almost strained. Max glanced up from the clump of wet clay in front of him that he refused to touch.
"David, I'm busy," she snapped in a hushed tone.
"I'm going into the city for the weekend."
"What?!" She cried, looking at him. Max instantly looked over at the two, not expecting to ever hear those words come out of David's mouth. He wasn't the only one to notice either- Neil, Nikki and Harrison all looked up at the counselors in confusion.
"Those are your camp days!" Gwen said in annoyance.
"Why are you going into the city? Can't you just go into town?" Harrison inquired.
"Yeah, David. What's a country guy like you doing going into the city?" Max asked antagonizingly.
"Whoa, whoa, calm down campers." Max had a feeling he was the only one who picked up on the shakiness of his voice. "I just have some family matters to attend to. That's all."
"You mean like a funeral?" Nerris asked, and Max could tell that hit a spot in David's heart, which caused the short boy to frown.
Gwen was starting to pick up what was going on, and Max wondered what they knew that he didn't.
"It's alright, David. Quartermaster and I will take care of things here, okay?" She patted his shoulder gently, and David nodded a bit glumly
