’47 please’. I asked as Luke pressed the buttons on the side of the lift.
‘Sure thing.’ He replied leaning against the side of the wall as the doors began to shut.
‘Going up’. The creepy voice recording echoed through the room as we set off and the music started to play. Cheesy elevator music always makes me laugh and I couldn’t help but giggle as You Raise Me Up by Westlife came on.
‘Hey don’t laugh this is my favourite song.’ The boy across from me declared with a pout strewn across his face.
‘Really? You seem more like the punk kinda guy judging from your lipring’ I retorted trying to hold back the smile on my face.
‘No seriously I rock out to this kinda stuff on a daily basis.’
‘Yeah sure.’ Slightly unimpressed I looked down at the time. 930 pm. Perfect. I was right on time as usual. I placed my phone in my bag and looked up expecting to be arriving at the top but instead I was greeted by Luke giving a full out lip sync performance of the song.
‘YOU RAISSSEEE MEEE UPPPPPPPP’ he mouthed with over exaggerated actions to go along. For how unamused I’d just been I couldn’t help but laugh. He was pretty cute if I was honest and I had to say this was one of the funniest things I’d seen in a while. It’s not every day that a 6ft tall guy in mostly black, starts pretending to be west life waving his arms around the room and kneeling on the floor like an opera singer.
‘Im not stopping till you admit its an awesome song’ he said while trying to pretend he was still hurt.
‘Fine, fine its pretty cool.’ I laughed as he straightened up and gave me the biggest grin.
‘I’m Luke by the way’
‘Becca,’ I responded, shaking his hand.
‘Wait why aren’t we moving?’ I asked as I looked at the level display to see we’d been on level 34 for about 45 seconds. ‘I swear we’ve been on this floor for ages?’
‘Umm I dunno maybe the display broke and were still going up.’
‘Im pretty sure were not going up.’
Suddenly the lights began to flicker and we heard a large noise as the music went off, kind of like an electric shock.
‘Luke….?’
‘Um I think the lifts broken.’ He seemed pretty calm but his face suddenly changed as the lift shook a bit and then another large bang sounded as it suddenly seemed to all stop.
‘Ok so um the lift is definitely stuck now’. Luke stated trying to figure out what was going on.
‘Yeah I got that much. But how do we get out of here.’
‘Theres usually some kind of button right that calls people or something.’ Luke was looking around the lift until he saw the red button on the dial pad.
‘Yeah press that and it should call reception or something.’ I looked up at the sign saying we were on floor 33. Great 33 stories to fall.
‘You know were not gonna fall right.’ Luke had looked up from the wall and he genuinely seemed concerned. ‘ These things are pretty secure. Im sure it was just an electrical problem or something.’
‘I’m just not great with heights I guess,’ I murmured as he gave me a reassuring smile.
‘Itll be fine trust me.’
‘Hello you’ve reached reception may I help you?’.
‘Yes hi’ I yelled in relief running over to the speaker. ‘We are stuck in one of the hotel elevators. It seems to have stopped at floor 33.’
‘OK which lift are you in madam and how many people are there?’
‘There are two of us. And were in one of the lifts going up from the lobby. My name is Becca Hardy’ I responded nudging Luke as he repeatedly pressed the open button on the door.
‘And Im Luke Hemmings.’ He stated.
‘Wait, I swear I know someone called Luke Hemmings. I recognize your name.’ I responded quietly as we waited for the attendant to respond.
‘That could possibly be from my band’
‘Wait, Luke Hemmings, Luke Hemmings.’ I repeated to myself. ‘Youre from 5 seconds of summer right? Youre music is awesome.’
‘Wait so you’ve heard of us?’ He smiled. ‘And thanks.’
I smiled back and looked him in the eyes. They were gorgeous I had to say, bright blue like mine but deeper and much lighter. I almost forgot what I was doing until the receptionist returned.
‘Hello again. Hi so it seems there has been an electrical failure in the lift that you are currently in. You are perfectly stable in your position at the moment between 2 floors but in order to lower the lift we need to wait for an electrician to come. It could be a few minutes it could be a few hours but well try our best.’
‘Wait so we could be stuck up here for hours?’
‘Were trying our best here and well get you out as soon as possible. He answered. ‘In the meantime I have notified both of your rooms of the problem and we will be keeping them up to date, but have assured them you’re in no real danger. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more details.’
And with that we could hear the sound of the receiver being put down.
== I just wanted to say thank you to anyone reading this and to Lucy for the cover. Enjoy :)
