Carys/Mia's POV
We creep through a series of tunnels that twist and turn like curled hair. The damp, cold air snaps at my nose. Fortunately, the armour Lewis has given me is relatively insulated so it's only my face that feels the nip of the cold. The only sounds in the tunnels are soft footsteps and the occasional drop of water. Simon has spent hours digging these tunnels. There are multiple escape routes and parallel tunnels so that if there's a cave-in in one tunnel, we can still get out safely. Everyone is geared to the teeth with weapons. Some of the strongest armour I've ever seen is being warm by us all, keeping us protected from whatever Hatfilms throws at us.
Lewis signals us to pick up the pace and begin a quiet run. Martyn and I are at the back so it's our responsibility to make sure nothing is going to attack us from behind. What the rest of my party don't know is that Araquiel is also here, keeping an eye out for us. However, we can only communicate subtly, I give hand gestures and nods to signify different things. Fortunately, she can talk to me without anyone else hearing. We've developed an alright system which shall serve its purpose but is far from perfect. If I place my left forefinger on my hip I'm asking 'did you hear that too?'. If I shiver I'm saying 'we need to check this out.' If I cough twice it means I'm about to use my magic and need a distraction. Of course, none of these will work once we have entered combat but it's shown it worth whilst we traverse the tunnels.
Suddenly, our group comes to a stop, "Righ' this leads directly under Martyn's base. We should enter three meters from the main gates." Simon explains,
"Right everyone, from here, I can't guarantee that we'll be safe. Hatfilms may have planted bombs and traps so be on the lookout. Martyn, I want you in front to guide us to your bombs and weapons." Lewis instructs, "once they are located: Kim and Duncan I want you to transfer it all into our mine carts and send them home. While you're doing that...the rest of us will try and secure a perimeter and set some traps." Simon hacks at the walls, blinding light floods our tunnel and we all squint for a moment. Martyn pushed through to the front, but unbeknownst to him, Araquiel is already outside searching the area. Slowly we all make our way out of the tunnels. I grip my shotgun with shaking hands. Because of my poor fighting skills, I've been instructed to use ranged weapons to defend us. My feet find themselves on familiar ground. I feel a comforting hand of familiarity guide me along the path. Martyn lifts his hand. Silence. His head turns to the animal pen. I raise an eyebrow at his actions. Then, out of nowhere, he lifts a flaming arrow
"Martyn, what are you doing?" I gasp. Duncan clasps his hand over my mouth. I attempt to squirm myself out of his grip but it's too late. Martyn releases the arrow and sets the cage catches alight. Within moments, the fences are destroyed and the animals sprint for freedom and safety, towards myself and Araquiel. But before any of them reach Araquiel, just a few meters from Martyn, the ground busts into explosions. Dirt flies everywhere, as does the remnants on the poor pig that triggered the trap. I run forwards and snatch Martyn into my arms, protecting him from any blast. After a short moment, we all lift our heads and glance around us. Araquiel is guiding the pigs out of the gates and no further bombs have detonated. We breath a collective sigh and we return to our feet. I snatch my hands away from Martyn and allow him some space. Strangely, he's yet to take his eyes off of me. I'm scanned and checked with glances by everyone. The attention causes me to fold my arms and hunch together slightly.
"Are you alright?" We say in unison.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Are you hurt?" Martyn answers, taking my hands and checking them,
"No, I should be alright." I reassured. Lewis claps to gain our attention,
"Alright everyone, it looks like Hatfilms have already been here and set some traps so we'll have to be extra careful." He declares, "Martyn, Mia, I want you two to clear the rooms and then hen we can conduct further inspection. I nod and proceed to make my way over to one of the tree houses. I bend down and scoop up a handful of rocks and proceed to throwing them just in front of me as I walk. I reach the tree and thus launch a few stones up against the bark. Nothing. I wrap my fingers around the ladders and begin to climb. My ears search for any sign of a wire being tripped or bombs detonating. Once I reach the top, I begin to clear the rooms. After a quick search I shout clear and then proceed to the next room.
