1. Door Traveler

I was reliving my biggest nightmare, but this time I was sure something was different. I was not scared like the previous nights. Actually the dream wasn’t scary at all, it was nerve-racking. I was alone as usual. No one was there to encourage me or help me face my fears. My heart sent me a massage telling me that this time the dream seemed too real to be just a dream. Maybe tonight was the night that my previous nightmares had been warning me about. The night my life would turn upside down.

It all started with fire. Orange flames were dancing around my body. Without my permission, my body started spinning around faster and faster. I tried to stop spinning wondering if I could change the dream. No. Nothing happened. I kept wriggling.

After several minutes, I stopped and the fire was no longer around me. I was alone in a large dark room with a lot of doors. The doors weren’t all the same. The colors, the shapes and the century which the doors were from, were different. The room was circular, with a ceiling that tapered to a point, as if it had been built inside a towel. Doors were placed all over the walls. Without thinking I counted the doors, although I knew the number from the previous times. 20. Like always I had to choose 2 doors.

Another trip was “hiding” behind each door , but not a usual one. I had already been to 8 places. Through these doors I could go everywhere. I could travel through time, exploring the past and discovering the future. I could visit another country or even another planet. That would be a perfect adventure but there are two problems.

Firstly, I don’t know what trip is hidden behind each door. Every time I come here the doors are shuffled, so I have already visited my past 2 times and I have seen dinosaurs 4. Also, I have visited Mars. That’s definitely an experience I would never forget.

Secondly, one of the doors is locked. Actually, this door is my only fear. If I accidently choose that one, I will go on a trip to inferno. An one way trip. That was the whole problem. At first, I didn’t know about that and I was waiting impatiently for the night, when I could go to sleep. Theoretically I am sleeping but practically I’m not. My spirit travels here every night, in a place where time is frozen. So, after a couple of weeks I learned about that door. That was the night that everything changed. I wasn’t thrilled and happy anymore. My most perfect dream had turned into my biggest nightmare.

I examined the doors one more time. I should focus and listen to my heart. I closed my eyes and I started walking. When I opened them I was in front of number 5. It was a black door from the middle ages with mould all over the surface. That was a door I wouldn’t normally open, but I tried. The door opened. Thank God. Where was I? I looked back to the closed door. Hmm. I wasn’t in the middle ages. I was in year 2458. Nice. I started walking, exploring the countryside. Everything seemed the same. Well, not everything. Actually, the only thing that was the same was the sky.

Theoretically, I was near the Amazon River, but really the scenery looked more like Sahara. I could not see any kind of nature except sand and rocks, if these things were part of in nature. It was so sad that I didn’t realize the fact that I hadn’t seen anyone yet. Not even an animal. So that’s it? No human beings alive in 2458? I started walking towards the door. I didn’t have much to see. I got the point. I would sign up in Greenpeace in the morning. Well, that’s not the point but I would do that. After a few steps I hit something hard and I said something because practically, I had just hit the air.

“Watch where you are going!” the air said. What are you doing here?

“I’m sorry what?” I said.

“Dude where is your invisible cloak?” what?

“Why would you wear something like that?” I asked the man. At least I supposed it was a man.

“Because otherwise I would have to say hello to everyone.” Oh my God! What happened here?

“Can you please take it off for a moment?” I asked. I shouldn’t have. The man wasn’t overweight. No. He was over-over-overweight. It was scary.

“Do you ever exercise?” I told the man.

“WHY DO YOU SWEAR IN FRONT OF ME?” he yelled at me. “OUR GOVERNMENT SAID NO! WE OBEY THEM.” he yelled at me.

I stared blankly at him. In the present we fight for our beliefs. What happened in between? I started running towards the door.

“DON’T RUN AWAY FROM ME!” he tried to come after me but he failed. He couldn’t even move. I opened the door and I jumped into the dark room.

Without focusing I chose the pink door with flowers all over its surface. Number 13. It was so bright. Nothing bad could hide behind this door. Right?

I approached the door and I rested my hand in the doorknob. I tried to open it. You know, sometimes, appearances can be deceiving, because after my effort to open the door I felt my heart sinking. I pushed the door but before I close my eyes, I had the chance to realize that the door was locked.
