JULIET
"What is such a pretty lady doing by herself at a banquet like this?"
I felt a stranger take the seat next to me, which had been previously occupied by my mother.
"Menstruating," I threw my head back and downed her untouched champagne.
"Well then you're a brave one, for wearing a white gown." He chuckled.
I turned to him in surprise, typically, people would've left a gust of wind trying to run away before I uttered the last syllable.
Upon looking at his face, I immediately understood why he hadn't.
He was Bruce William. The only son of Robert William, a business owner looking to close a deal with my father. But otherwise an unimportant man in the league.
22 year old Bruce has 2 nicknames amongst my friends, The guy with two first names and The slut.
Blond, tall and strong, he was every girls fantasy when he attended secondary school. So when he had asked my cousin, Rosaline, to their senior prom, she happily obliged.
However, he bailed on her last minute to go with the head cheerleader. And for that, I took on a hatred for him. One that still exists to this day.
I guess the slut mistook my look of recognition for interest, because he shifted closer to me and laid a hand on my covered thigh.
"I like brave girls." He winked.
"Yeah?" I batted my lashes flirtatiously.
"Mhmm."
The fingers of my right hand traced his belt while the left inched toward my wine glass full of coke...and ice.
He leaned in even closer and I felt the heat rolling off of his body.
In one swift motion, I tugged on his pant forward+ and emptied the contents of the soda down the front.
"Well I don't like boys who treat girls like crap."
He yelped and jumped up, shimmying his legs to empty his trousers.
I stood up and walked away, making sure my stiletto heel graced his toes.
I ignored his curses and left.
I didn't care about what my parents would say.
After all, I was forced into another State.
There wasn't much more that they could do.

By the time I had finished showering and changing, my eyes were barely slits.
And when I hit the bed, they weren't even that.
I welcomed the darkness, willing it to lull me to sleep.
Children's laughter filled my head, the sound deafening and far away.
My eyes snapped open before searching the pitch dark room.
Goosebumps rose on my arms and shivers racked up my spine.
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. My breathing slowed and I found myself slipping out of consciousness once again.
A girly shriek of happiness shattered my mental silence; laughter started again but gradually quieted down.
Screams of little kids burst through the barrier and echoed in my mind.
Jolting up, I grabbed at my hair and looked around the room for the second time, hoping to find the culprit to my frazzled mind.
My line of vision stopped directly in front of me, where a mirror was carelessly positioned in front of my bed, waiting to be fastened against the wall.
I caught my own reflection, eyes blank and lost, hair moused and messy, and face white and sunken.
I needed to get out.
Grabbing my phone and keys, my legs carried me toward the door.
I wanted nothing more than to get as far away as I could, despite it being the midnight before my first day of school.
In a new town, a new state and a new chapter where twists and turns were waiting around every corner, ready to spin my chaotic life deeper into a foreign realm.
