Night Vale

I awoke to the sound of creaking wood and a rock thrown at my window from my bedroom doorway. Sitting at a right angle, I slowly circle my eyes around the rooms searching for the culprit.  The darkness in my room creates a panic of not noticing the figure at the end of my bed until I felt the weight of a body sitting down at the very edge. I turn to my bedside lamp and switch it on to find a young blue woman staring into my soul and smiling as if she just murdered someone and is trying to hide it. Her curly, white hair slowly dances as she turns her head down to look at a clipboard in her hand.

"Hi," she begins with a soft, velvet voice, "My name is Agent Lucy and I have been assigned your wish that you made exactly 2.3 hours ago before you began to rest."

I tilt my head to the side to understand her. She's very different. But, without question, I reply anyway as if she's an average human being.

"Hello, Lucy. I'm Caleb. You said I made a wish about-"

"2.3 hours ago." She interrupts.

"Right," I continue, "That wish was used by a shooting star, are you from that star?"

She laughs, "No no no, my darling. It's a satellite, my home is a satellite." I nod as if it's abnormal thing. So I began my interrogation.

"What was my wish since you know so much?"

"Oh, darling, you already know it yourself so why should I repeat it?"

"How do I know you're not just somebody who is playing a prank?"

"Dear, I am not."

"What's with all the pet names?"

"It's better to know our customers on a personal level, we were told in training."

"What's your home called?"

"Night Vale."

"Sounds fake."

"It is not, my dear. Are we done with the questions? I am ready to help you get your wish."

I nod and she snaps her fingers. We then appear to be in the lounge room of my college dorm building, surrounded by men and women of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

"We must ask your friend, Kelly, to help us." She informs me.

"Why do we need her?"

"Because, she is your wish." Agent Lucy replies, which confuses me more.

"No she isn't. She's not my wish."

"Yes, she has been your wish for a long time."

"But I didn't wish for her tonight."

"No, you did not. But, she will help anyway." Agent Lucy tells me and begins to walk to her. "Now, since she cannot see me, you're going to have to repeat after me. Okay, Caleb?"

"Okay."

She tells me how to get Kelly to join me and go to her father's house. We open the door the office her father has and explain what's going on. Her father promises to help, saying how "tragic it is for a young boy to suffer like this". We follow him to a hospital and he does however much he can do to help my wish situation. The whole time, Agent Lucy is quiet. When we get to the hospital, I pull her to the side.

"Is everything okay, Agent Lucy? You have been very quiet." I leave her in silence and await for her answer. Tears quietly begin stream down her face as she explains the importance of my wish to her.

"They assign us to wishes that either will affect us, or we know about emotionally. Your case was assigned to me because I have recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness. My boss told me that I needed to 'learn how to cope' with myself. Now, let's get your wish to come true."

We begin the long chemo process with hopes that my wish will become true.

Turns out, she truly believed that my mother could be saved from the tumor by her heart.

Some hearts can't be saved.
