In about 4 minutes is Melo's birthday but for now, we were on facetime. He had wanted me to be the first person he talked to as a sixteen year old, which I felt was corny but it was his birthday so it's whatever.

"You're falling asleep"

"Melo, it's 11:57 and I had to do a lot of shit today. A nigga is tired." I replied rather annoyed.

"C'mon it's a real nigga's birthday. Turn up, damn!" He answered matter-of-factly.

"Shut the shit up, look at your clock dumbass it's 11:59."

"12, 11, 10, 9, 8..." He slowly counted down the seconds until he was greeted to another year.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MELO" I screamed as the clock turned 12:00, draining the rest of the energy I had left in me.

"Wow, this is unexpected, but" he began but I quickly cut him off, "Yea, don't push it Dip. Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Ky!"

The soon ended and so did my day. I was too tired and had to get up bright and early due to the fact that Melo's party was tomorrow.

-----

"Get yourself as much as you want."

Right now, the Ball family had about 100 people in their home as they hosted Melo's party. Lamelo wanted something small and he was enjoying every second of it.

Maybe it's just me but if I had as much clout as him, my 16th would be out of this fuckin world but I guess there's definitely a difference in our mindset.

"Thanks, it all looks so good. I'll definitely have about three to-go plates." I replied to Lavar as he was barbecuing on his expensive looking grill.

The boys and their friends were either upstairs playing 2k or on the basketball court. I decided to go upstairs due to the sweltering California heat. As I made my way up the stairs, the sounds of upset boys travelled to my ears.

"Bro, what the fuck. I call next game." Narvin made clear to the rest of the boys.

They were all sitting on the bed closely observing the tv closely trying to strategically get the ball in the basket to win the game. This wasn't new, it was just boring to me.

"Hey, guys!" I yelled, making my arrival known.

A couple of "heys" and "wassups" rang out but eyes were still glued to the tv. Melo was playing against Ejay and the game was extremely close. They were on the edge of the king bed while Narvin, O, and Will were farther back. I quickly sat beside Will.

"How long have they been playing?" I asked quietly.

"An hour. Everytime Ejay loses he begs to play again so he can beat Melo, it hasn't happened yet." Will chuckled, clearly finishing the situation funny.

You would think that on his birthday Melo would want to do something different, I guess I was wrong.

"They need to read a book."

"And you need a boyfriend." Ejay called out, hearing my previous dig at the two.

"You know Ejay, for your information, I am talking to someone at the moment." I quickly said, a scowl on my face.

"Oh yea, who?"

Now, all of the boys were looking straight at me, attention totally redirected.

"His name is Taylor, I met him at my Trigonometry classes at the library." I explained to the lot of surprised looking boys.

Now it was Melo's turn to speak up, "Yall been on a date or even kissed yet?"

I could taste the saltiness coming off of his words but I chose to ignore it.

"No but he asked me out but we never figured out the date."

"Well you let me know when you do." He answered, swiftly turning his attention back to his game, as did the other boys.

Of course I wasn't gonna let his lightskin ass know. This was my date and I wasn't gonna let him nor his friends ruin it for me.

At the moment, Narvin and Will were playing the game, O, Ejay, and Will went to go downstairs to play basketball with Quan and Don, and Melo was laying beside me. We were dosing off until someone yelled, "Cmon Melo, time to cut the cake."

The boys paused the game and the four of us made our way down the stairs.

Crowds of people surrounded Melo with their phones out ready to capture the moment where Melo blows out his candles.

"Happy birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Dear Melooooooo, Happy Birthday to you!"

Melo face lit up as he heard the chorus of people singing for him. After the singing had ended he began to blow out the multicolored candles, eyes closed shut.

He slowly began to open his eyes and only to meet mine. He winked at me laughing as he hugged his immediate family. He's such an ass but I guess he's alright.

--------
Ms. Tina and I were cleaning up the kitchen as the boys collected the trash around the house. It was comforting to have her back around the house and I knew Melo was most happy to have her home. It was about 9:30 and I was ready to go home.

"Thank you honey for helping me and the boys clean up. It really means a lot."

"No problem, anytime." I answered, assuring her it was no trouble.

"Kyla, can you come upstairs real quick?" Melo yelled from his bedroom.

"Ok!" I called back, putting down the dish rag and jogging towards the second level.

He was sitting on his bed looking at his iphone 7.

"What's up?" I questioned, wondering what was so desperate.

"Nothing, I just wanted to see if you enjoyed the party." He answered.

"Oh it was really fun, how'd you enjoy it?"

"It was great, loved having everyone close to me here."

An awkward silence took over us before Melo asked the question I knew he really wanted to ask.

"Are you really thinking of dating that Taylor guy?" He questioned, his eyes burning holes in my face.

I really didn't know to be honest. He was cool and everything but some feeling still remained for LaMelo. I was just trying to take things slow.

"I don't know right now, why?"

"No reason, just asking." He said as he flipped over on his side, scrolling down on his twitter feed.

"Okay, well I'll see you later." I said rather quietly.

"See ya."
