Tris

Chapter 18

*a few days later

"Tris, get up, now!" Tobias's voice rings in my ears, and it takes me a few seconds to process what he just said. "Why?" His dark blue eyes are filled with fear, but he's not afraid of dying;he's afraid of losing Alex, Liv, and me. Whatever is going on must be deadly.

"It's Erudite. They invented a serum that permanently turns the Dauntless into soldiers. We can't shut it off, like last time. A train will arrive in five minutes, so if we can sneak out, we can escape." He says this so fast, I barely can make out what he's saying. I nod, and get up.

He grabs Alex and Liv, and hides them in a bulletproof bag. Before he zips it shut, he whispers,"I love you, and you're going to be okay. I'll get you out of this," and kisses them both on their foreheads.

We sprint out the door, grabbing two guns on our way out. Only few Dauntless have been turned into soldiers, so we navigate our way through the compound easily. Once we're outside though, it's a different story.

Dozens of Dauntless march, guns in hand, feet in pattern. I look at Tobias, and he nods, telling me to shoot. We start shooting, and Dauntless begin to fall.

Bullets whiz past my face, one grazes my neck. I would feel pain, but my whole body is full of adrenaline.

Tobias yelps, and I see a bullet has hit his arm. Blood pours down his shoulder, but he keeps shooting, and so do I.

Once we hit the last soldier, I hear a train, and Tobias and I run. Dauntless soldiers are regrouping again, following us, but we can't shoot them or we'll miss the train. Tobias jumps, hand covered in blood, and almost slips, but manages to climb in. I jump, and while I'm in midair, two bullets hit me:in the arm, on my bicep, and the back of my calf. I scream as the corners of my eyes turn black, giving me the will to pass out.

With his shot arm, Tobias pulls me into the train, groaning as I step inside. He reaches for his pocket, fumbling, and pulls out a knife. "You're not going to like this." He puts the knife into my arm, and I scream, and start to shake, unable to handle the pain. "Tris, I need you to calm down. I know it hurts, but I need to get the bullets out."

I nod, still sniffling, and I try to stop shaking. Once the bullet is out, he takes off his shirt, and rips a long strip of cloth off. "You need stitches, but this should help stop the bleeding." He wraps my arm tightly, and moves to my leg. After that bullet is gone, I ask,"What about your arm?" He shrugs, making him wince. "It's fine, Tris. I'll get it out later."

His whole face is full of agony:his blue eyes tearing up, and he's biting his lip, so hard it might come off.

"I can get it out." I've never done it, but I remember when my father did. The though of my father fills me with grief.

He nods, and starts to wipe off the knife. After he hands it to me, I stick it into his arm. His muscles tighten, and I put my free hand to his face. "Relax, Tobias."

I get the bullet out, and wrap his arm as tightly as I can. "How does it feel?" I don't know why I asked, because it probably feels terrible.

"Like I've been shot. You?" I laugh, while saying,"Same."

I drag the bag that holds Alex and Liv over, carefully with my left hand. After getting it to me, I unzip the bag, to see them. They both have Tobias's dark blue eyes. Alex has Tobias's dark, brown hair, but Liv has a darker blonde, like mine. I hug them both to my chest, thankful that their okay.

I give Liv to Tobias, and he cradles her to sleep. Alex dozes off in my arms a few minutes later. "They're fighter, just like their mommy." Tobias kisses me, and I kiss him back. "And their daddy." He laughs, and I join in. I lie on his chest, tiredness washing over me like a tsunami.

"Tobias, where are we going?"

He brushes his hand through my hair, and I know they're covered in blood;my blood, his blood, but all I can think is I don't care, I don't care, I don't care.

Before I get an answer, I fall asleep, his lips on my forehead.
