August 8

I tap my fingers against my leg impatiently I've been waiting for two hours for her to come out but no doctor has said anything to me yet. I've watched people come and go and after a few more hours of waiting I'm the only one left in the dark room. It was once lit up by sunshine but the sun has set and the moon has taken over. Still I watch and wait until finally a nurse waves me over. "You can have twenty minutes." She nods letting me into the room where my love lay asleep.

"I thought I was taking her home?" I stand a good distance away from the bed while she shakes her head at me.

"Another gentleman that she knows much better is gonna come for her tomorrow, I just thought I'd give you one visit. They live in Portugal." She explains. By the last word I'm holding her tightly against my chest.

"You can't let her go to Portugal, he probably doesn't know how to care for her." I brush my fingers through her hair.

"He's a nurse so I'm sure he does." She nods while I cry against her. The last time I'll see her, and I can't even see her while she's conscious.

"Bye princess," I whisper in her ear earning a whine as a response. "Sleepy baby girl?" I kiss her cheek. "Sleepy?" My hand rubs her back. "You guys promised me I'd get to take her home if I couldn't visit." I stay as quiet as possible but the tears in my eyes, the tears that have already spilled are too much to ignore.

"She doesn't know who you are Shawn, and we can't just live off of hope and promises." She explains making me cry more.

"I did," I sniff kissing her neck and shoulder giving her a few marks. I know I shouldn't but if she's gonna be off with some other guy he's gonna know I was with her and I'm gonna make sure of it. "I missed you so much," I stare at her faded blonde hair and how knotted and shaggy it is, it's so long now. "And I really hope he'll love you as much as I do." I nod kissing her soft lips one more time she's been forced to sleep.

"We successfully removed the tumour on her brain so that's cleared up now," she nods. "If you were wondering." I nod even though I wasn't, I'm just trying to enjoy every second I have with the woman I love. "Alright Mr. Mendes," she places a hand on my shoulder while Reese starts to stir.

"You said twenty minutes, it's only been fifteen." I beg holding onto her.

"We can't afford this Mr. Mendes please exit the room quickly or we'll be forced to call security." I nod looking at the floor while I make my way out. The nurse follows me out touching my shoulder and when I turn to ask her to remove her hand she gives me a sweater that Reese always wore, a piece of my merchandise. "Happy birthday." She nods sending me off with a sad smile. I'm just as upset, I saw her wearing someone else's merchandise but it really didn't bother me, I was too busy trying to spend time with her.

"I figured you two would be out all day," our dads laugh. Our moms lay asleep on the couch. "Where is she?" Her dad looks panicked and I shrug.

"They gave me twenty minutes with her because tomorrow she's moving to Portugal with another guy." I look at my feet. I can still feel the soft touch of her lips against mine, even if she didn't kiss me back. That kiss was the first one I've given to any body since the new year. "She'll be gone by noon tomorrow." I shrug showing them to rooms, the one Reese and I slept in and our spare room. "You can take the rooms," I lift my mother off of the couch laying her in my bed, I then take Reese's mother and put her in the bonus room sitting on the couch. Our dads are off to sleep but I'm gonna watch old videos, old episodes of the show they canceled after our divorce. The only little pieces of memory I can keep forever of her, my baby girl.

Someone's head on my chest brings my great excitement but as my eyes open it's only Chrissy, she lays asleep on top of me while Ian probably goes to visit her. I fall back in disappointment letting tears well in my eyes again. I really thought yesterday was gonna be the best birthday I've ever had I lived off of promises for nine months, promises and hope, hope that I can't find anymore and promises that we're bound to be broken, I just didn't see it. "Don't move," Chrissy whines holding her arms around me while I try to go back to sleep.

"Are you sure there's nothing I can do? Not even tell you that he's a criminal?" Ian talks on the phone with a cocky sound to his voice while I hug Chrissy as if she were my baby girl. I pull her farther up letting her head lay against my shoulder in the place of my chest. She's taller than Reese, as is just about everyone else, but she still holds me like Reese did. "Ok well thank you for your time." There are some more voices asking him about what happened. "They don't care." He shrugs. "She'll be off to Portugal any minute."

"Mama! Mama!" The kids run out of their rooms with more excitement I've ever seen in them. "She's sleeping?" They giggle walking over to see but they know quickly that it's only Chrissy. "Mama?" They walk around everywhere that Reese was allowed to be alone. "Where's mama?" She goes to Ian and the others in the kitchen. "Daddy was bringing her home, wasn't he?" They pout and our little boys look like they might cry. They love their mama so much and I feel like it's my fault that I can't bring her home to them.

"Mamas not better yet,"
