Chapter XVIII
Marvin (turning tables here. FYI some of this chapter will be in italics because Marvin will be flash-backing a bit.)
I was sitting at the quad where I saw my friends. Antonio and Brad were there and we fist-bumped each other since we had made it to the fifth grade. Everyone here considered the stupid bad boys and that we wouldn't pass. Well, luckily those pricks transferred.
We were the only ones in the room besides the teacher and some nerdy chicks. Slowly but surely, all the other kids filed in. After what seemed that everyone had come, the teacher got up to introduce herself. I lost interest after her third or so sentence. Suddenly, she stopped talking and no one knew why. I heard a weak, almost silent knock on the door. Apparently, I was the only one to notice besides Mrs. what ever her name was. She went to the door and opened it gingerly.
"Oh, you must be," She glanced at her roster at everyone but the person. "Irena Armich?" The girl gave a small 'yes ma'am' that even I had trouble hearing.
"Alrighty then, Irena. You can sit at.....That table where Marvin sits." I looked over at Brad and he mouthed, 'Great. Here comes another goodie-goodie.'
"Marvin, raise your hand please." My arm went up and you could literally feel the nervousness rolling off this Irena as she walked over to us.
"Alright class. Take this next few minutes to get to know your classmates." The teacher walked to her desk and went onto her computer, leaving us all to chatter away.
The girl sat down and just sat there, looking down at her desk. For kicks, I gently shoved the desk and she jumped in surprise.
"Is that how you say hi to your year long table mates?" I asked. That came out a lot rougher than planned.
"I-I-I'm s-sorry." She whispered. She looked back down to her desk and Brad scoffed. I rolled my eyes and turned to them to catch up on their summers. There something about this girl that will definitely come across me later.
Boy, was that fifth grader's head right. I knew Irena wouldn't ever come back to a jerk like me, but I just have to get things cleared with her. And here I was, standing infront of her, her head hanging the same way it was that first day of school. Ok, this is getting a little awkward....
"So. This quest. Big time stuff." Wow, that was dumb.
She looked up at me and I swear I saw a super faint smile.
"Yeah. Tell me about it." I felt the weird feeling lift as she seemed to not be thinking about that day. I knew, though, she was.
"You know about battle strategies with spathas right?" She nodded her shy little nod I remember from a few years ago.
"Ok. Let's see what you know."
She drew her spatha and before I could draw mine, she snatched it out of it's hoster and swung around. When she stepped back, one blade as pointed at my neck and the other was in her hand which was down my back. If she was good at one thing, it was split second maneuvering.
"Hey,that's not fair. Give it back!" I sounded like a five year old. She smiled. Really though. That smile should be around more often. Her arm slid off my shoulder and she handed my spatha back. As soon at she did, I swung at her. As if knowing what I was going to do, she blocked the attack and used an oldie but a goodie move. When I attacked, she flipped back and landed in another battle stance. Her skill surprised me. I knew that some girls were tough, but this particular girl was tough, smart, and she could really fight. We continued for a really long time, me stopping here and there to give her advice. There was a general aura of tension between her and me, and I hate any kind of it.
"Hey, Irena?" She looked up at me with those warm, light brown eyes which seemed to be clouded with all kinds of emotions.
"Yes, Marvin."
"Can I talk to you about what happened when, you know,"
She looked down again and I resisted the urge to make her look at me. Ever since I saw her, she had fascinated me to the extent, where I was loosing my edge. That was how I had hurt her.
"O-Ok. But, just mention him. Please." Her voice pleading. I nodded.
"Look, I made a stupid mistake. I'm a worthless jerk and I shouldn't have done what happened. All I need is for you to know that."
Her head lifted and her eyes met mine. She than walked up to me and placed a hand over my shoulder.
"I know. But please don't call yourself worthless. You did hurt me and I won't forget it. Yet, I know that when it comes to something that matters, people will do whatever it takes to ensure their point. You hurt me Marvin. The kind hurt that's etched into someone. I forgive you, nonetheless."
I looked at her in surprise. I didn't expect that reaction. I thought she was going to go full out sailor and blow her top. This girl's something else.
"Really?"
Yeah. I mean, everyone has their days and moments where they aren't at their best." Suddenly, her hand flew to her mouth. I was confused to why and took her hand away. Her mouth still hung a bit ajar. What the heck...
"I-I'm sorry. I didn't m-mean it like tha-"
"Hey. Listen to me Irena. There is no possible way that you should treat me like I'm a God. I would expect you to be hating my guts to the extent that your hoster wouldn't be filled."
Her expression softened and she came at ease. I smiled and and a small one grew on her lips.
"Thank you." I said softly. I dropped her hand and collected my spatha. She did the same.
"Marvin?"
"Yeah?"
"Could we go and check on Mason and Cat?"
"Ma'am, stop asking me for permission. Do what you want ok? Plus, I have a feeling that something between those two isn't right." My expression grew grimm as did her's. Suddenly, I heard an all too familiar yell come from where the two had gone. Before I could react, Irena ran and I was not to far behind.
