My mind struggled
to understand why
You told me once
One last time.
One last try.
As I stared into the darkness
of dull hazel eyes.
I saw a soldier
Battling war with himself.
You were out of tries.
Even though your smile
Always lit a hopeful flame.
Between all of our goodbyes
Maybe I believed your lies.
Just as the fire flickered out
Hope was gone.
You were quick to throw blame
For the drugs and endless game.
Your grip was never strong
Letting you in wasn't the same.
You slid down the slope.
Even when I told you
That's not where you belong.
Now I'm not so lame.
I don't accept responsibility
For any of your shame.
