"Ella"
Mayor McCoy was startled to see her youngest daughter standing at her doorstep
"Hi mom"
Ella looked at her mom and brought her eyes back down to her busted boots
"Hell no"
Miles gave Ella the evil eye and she gasped an air of confidence . Josie walked to the door and gasped
"Ella!"
"You are not welcome here"
Miles snarled while trying to sit the door. Mayor McCoy held the door.
"Let her come in miles its freezing."
Miles looked at his wife.
"If she's in I'm out"!
Josie grabbed Ella's hand and miles stepped outside.
"Miles get back in here"
The mayor grabbed is sleeve but Miles grabbed his jacket and keys and walked to his car.
"Tell me when she's gone!"
The three women stood huddled in the doorway watching miles pull out of the driveway, wondering where he was going to go. The mayor closed the door. Josie hugged Ella
"Ella I missed you so much"
"We need to talk" The mayors voice was stiff.
They sat at the kitchen table. Ella had stacked all of her self esteem and was ready for her mother to bombard her with questions.
"Where have you been"
"After I left I went straight to Ohio. I wanted to be a tattoo artist. I tried to get a job but instead got a few other jobs. Waiting on tables, movies theaters and stuff." Her face had lie written all over it. " I was able to rent an apartment for 2 months and then I moved in to a group home."
"Oh my" Josie had her hands over her mouth. She couldn't believe she hadn't thought about her sister once after she left.
"People who don't have a plan end up homeless, or haven't you heard?" Mayor McCoy sternly looked at Ella and made her feel very uncomfortable. She shifted in her chair and pulled the sleeves of her sweatshirt down to cover her hands
"And what is going on with your hair"
"While I was down there I got locks. Not to rebel but because I like the culture behind them mom." " Ugh" The mayor scrunched up her mouth
"I Like em Ella. Ella smiled a weak smile
"you're a disgrace Ella" Ella pursed her lips.
"Mom were going upstairs, Ella needs to change and shower. Umm we'll be back"
Josie pulled Ella upstairs. Ella missed the spaciousness of the house, but now she had humbled out and she was pleased with that. Once they got to the room, Josie grabbed Ella's hands.
"Things are different now, I can't say better or worse, but there are changes, either way you're going to help everyone by being here."
Ella grabbed her sister close to her
"I love you" Ella whispered
Josie just mumbled but Ella knew she was replying.
