The flames reached up and the light and shadows danced on a woman's face. She had shoulder length, curly, brown hair. In this light it looked like silk ribbons. Her face could have been carved by the gods. Her laugh was musical, light with dark under tones. Her eyes were large, but that didn't matter a bit. She was smiling, happy. He had seen her happy before. He had watched her in her laughter, anger, and sadness. He had seen all of it in her before. But somehow, right now, that was different. It was the same smile he loved, but right now it lured him closer to her. He longed to be by her side so much it hurt. And as an addict to any drug he went to her.
He pushed through the crowd to find her by the fire. She looked over at him, and time seemed to stop. Her eyes beckoned to him. Pleading, begging, laughing, her eyes looked to him. She drew closer keeping him locked in her gaze. His eyes were a grayish blue. Bright and light. She held all the honey, soil, and wilderness in them. She held the day, while he held the moon and stars. They both knew one thing, this is more than friendship.
He looked away into the fire for just a second, giving him time to think. He looked back at her, held out a hand and smiled. She looked down shyly at his hand before boldly taking it and looking to him once again. He was familiar to her. From his slightly crooked nose to his lanky arms. She knew him as a best friend before this night. Long hours had been spent talking about anything and everything. She knew his nose was crooked from a fall off the monkey bars when he was six. He had fairly long hair, ear length blonde with bangs and a slight curl to the ends. She smiled as she knew his mom would take him for a haircut soon. He gave her a questioning look, to which she only shook her head. She was so happy, she felt amazing. She finally understood all the songs, all the sweet daydreams.
He looks at her shaking her head after he noticed her staring, only he was staring just as much, and he knew it too. He didn't care though. As long as his eyes were on her, and her's were on him, he felt as though he could do anything. He wanted to kiss her. She has become his stars, or perhaps she was his sun all along, it just took the night to show him. If heaven felt like something, this might be it. He lightly tugged on her hand, urging her toward him. She let her body follow this simple request and came so close, he was a breath away from her.Their eyes roamed the other's face, looking for that same feeling and grinning when they found it. Maybe it was the music, maybe it was the effect of a fall bonfire, maybe it was supposed to happen. Whatever the case may be, she kissed him softly on the lips. Barely a kiss. But too long just to be a peck.
He would have thought it a dream had she not given him the sweetest smile he had seen. He came back for more as if it was his oxygen. The kiss was pure ecstasy and neither wanted the dreaded end to come near. She pulled him into a full hug, while he held her as close as he could. They pulled away and smiled at one another, completely sure of this. In this moment, nothing but the two of them mattered. He hugged her and whispered in her ear, "Thank you, Eliza." He stood there, holding her as tears fell from her face. Each getting heavier than the last. She made no sound as tears streaked her face. She held onto him as a life line. Even so, he started to fade. His body eroding slowly, all his colors started to be drained from him, his limbs slowly becoming dust. His last words were, "I love you". The only sound to be heard was the faint laughter from the party. Eliza screamed the fire out of her lungs. The loss was too great, Eliza collapsed. That was her Kameron, her best friend, almost her lover. Eliza bitter sweetly smiled.
