It was the beginning of summer, a time of endless freedom and possibilities. I couldn't wait, I was packing up my bags for a summer full of fun and carelessness. I was on my way to Nantucket and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. I've been to Nantucket but this was the year I would be able to be free from family activities, I had just turned 18 and my family trusted me with the summer house for a week by myself and I couldn't be anymore thrilled.
"COME ON COLETTE BREAKFAST!" My mother had been rushing me all morning but little did she know I was making sure I didn't leave a thing behind. I slipped on my flip flops and grabbed my last bag and I was zooming down the stairs.
"Lucky your ass gets to go a week early. I have my last exam tomorrow." My brother Grant was just a year under me and was suffering from school. I felt a little guilty going without him but I couldn't help that he still had school.
"Well, you'll be there soon enough Grant. It won't be the end of the world." I reassured him so I don't have to hear him complain all morning.
The garage door opened and closed and I saw my father with his briefcase full of court cases.
"I'm running a bit late but, don't miss your flight and make sure to call when you land and get to the summer house. Alright kiddo?" I could see in his eyes there was a hint of worry. (Or a lot)
"I got it dad. I promise to call. Thanks for letting me go a week early. I won't let you down, I mean it's only a week what could happen?" I tried to reassure him but I'm 99.999% sure I just terrified him more.
We just laughed and he was running really late at that point.
"Alright, I gotta go. Don't forget. Flight. I love you. Be careful sweetheart. GRANT GOOD LUCK ON YOUR EXAM TODAY SON. I LOVE YOU HONEY!" He rushed out the garage door and was gone as quick as he arrived.
I walked to the kitchen and found my beautiful, tall, and slender mom cooking her last pancake.
"Dad said he loved you mom." I mentioned to her.
"Oh, did I miss him? I couldn't hear him over the TV." She looked a little disappointed but quickly recovered. "So you excited about Nantucket? Remember, your flight is in 3 hours. Make sure you have everything."
"Mom, I've been preparing for weeks. I'm sure I have everything I need." I grabbed a piece of her amazing bacon strips and before I could take a bite it was swiped out of my hands.
"Can't wait to see Kaaaaaade." My brother said in his most annoying girl voice that I sound nothing like.
"I like Kade, he's a nice boy. Is he going to be at Nantucket this year too?" My mom asked.
"Yeah, we both applied to the N.B Ice cream shop" I said shy like.
"Have you told him about how you feel yet?" My mom asked with an eyebrow raised.
My brother started making kissing noises. I gave him a slight shove.
"No, I haven't. I can't tell him, you guys know that. We've been best friends since we were 7. I don't wanna lose him over some small feelings." A short silence hushed over. Then suddenly, we all started laughing because everyone in this house hold knew I was head over heels for this boy.
"Colette you couldn't hide your feelings for him even if you wanted to honey." My mother mentioned. I covered my face with my hands.
"Yeah, everyone but Captain Obvious knows that your head over heels" Grant added. Which that didn't make my situation better. Half the students at my school knows and think we would make a great couple anyways.
