2010 Flashback
"Come in." I say to mom as she knocks in my doorway.

"It's almost time honey." She helps me with my tie and fixes my suit before walking me downstairs.

I felt nervous. Excited but nervous. Tonight is the sixth grade middle school dance and I asked to take Skylar. Why would I want to take any other girl?

My mom walked me next door so she could take pictures of us before we got in the car and were on our way.

"You look beautiful." I told her, in awe as we got out of the car.

"Thank you Shawn." She smiled. "I think that suit really suits you." She giggled.

As we entered the gym, music boomed through the walls. Is this the kind of music they play at a dance? I can't dance. I really can't dance. Especially not to this music.

"What should we do?" I looked at her.

"It's a dance Shawn." She laughed and rolled her eyes. "Come on, this way."

She grabbed my hand and led me through the crowd of middle schoolers. The music was so loud. My heart was beating along with the bass. She suddenly stopped and stared at something. Someone.

"What? What is it?"

"Shawn! Dylan is here. Do you think he'll want to dance with me?"

Of course. Of course she wants to dance with Dylan. He's one of the most popular boys at our school. He's a seventh grader. He has the styled up messy blonde hair and the striking blue eyes. What girl wouldn't fall for that? As for me, I'm at the bottom of the school chain.

Most of the time I don't even understand how Skylar has stayed friends with me. I'm the Harry Potter nerd with braces. I play music and I read books. And for some reason, they don't matter to Skylar. She cares about me. Not the things I do or my reputation. Just another thing I love about her.

I still don't understand how I got so lucky with her either. She's so fun and outgoing. She's still afraid of many things like any other normal human being but she's also adventurous. She has the cutest, tiny little snore and her smile can light up any room. Her eyes are a beautiful light brown with hints of green and her hair is always in the slightest waves as it lays just above her shoulders. She's so nice to everyone, sometimes too nice. I think I love her. I think I love Sky. But I'm twelve. What do I know?

"Why wouldn't he want to dance with you." I say sadly.

"Forget it, I'm sorry. You brought me here and I need to dance with you." She placed her hands in mine and smiled.

"No really Sky. I mean, maybe nows your chance!" I try to sound excited and I hint a smile. I know how badly she wants to dance with him.

"You really think so!?" She beams and pulls her hands from mine in what seemed like slow motion to me but it was quick.

"Go ahead Skylar. I'll go look for Aidan and Cameron."

"Are you sure?"

"Sure. I'll come and find you after awhile." I turn away from her, honestly pretty hurt.

I came to this dance to be with her.

"Wait!" She placed her hand on my shoulder and I turned around. "What do I do if a slow song comes on? Should I ask him to dance or like should I wait and see if he asks me?"

Really Skylar? My heart feels stabbed.

"I was thinking you and I could dance when the music slowed down."

"Oh." She frowned. "Umm yeah! That's fine, that's okay. I'll see you then?"

I nodded my head and turned away from her again. There's so many people in here I had trouble making my way through.

About an hour has passed and the lights started to dim. It happened fast. Ed Sheeran came on and I immediately smiled. This I can dance to. The crowd split up in all different ways and it made it easier for me to spot Skylar right away.

She was talking to Dylan, so I walked slowly towards her. He placed one of her hands in his and I could see her blush.

*ive gotta get over there fast* I said to myself.

She leaned into him and whispered something into his ear, drawing her hand away from his. He nodded his head before she turned around and met eyes with me.

I gave her the biggest smile and she returned.

We danced through the night, her head on my chest for I have always been taller than her and my head resting on hers. I lifted my head up as did she.

"What's wrong?" Her eyes stared up to meet mine.

"May I kiss you?"

"What?" She laughed and gave me the weirdest look. I'll never forget this. "Sure Shawn." She giggled.

I closed my eyes, leaned in and planted a kiss on her lips. It lasted for about two seconds and I don't think I did it right but maybe I'll have the chance someday to make up for it.
