I stare at small round cake. The creamy white frosting, pink roses were decorated on top. The words, Happy Mother's day, was printed in cursive with yellow frosting. As i stared at, a memory came to me.
I was about twelve, it was mother's day, and my mother had organized a party for all her girl-friends. It wasn't the kind of party a twelve year girl might imagen. I though it the kind of party where my mother's friends would bring in their children and we would play, while our mother's talked. It was actually the opposite. Once one of her friends brought in the large bottles of wine and cheap beer, it got crazy. And the only thing I did was stare at the cake i had baked. No one even had glance at it and asked for a piece. And I remembered crying. Hating my mother and wished that my grandmother could be here, enjoying the cake... the cake she had taught me to make.
I had cried so much, I drifted to a small nap. It was a long enough nap for me to dream. I had dreamed about my grandmother, her huge smile and quite laugh. She had always brought sunshine to my life. We were baking a cake, my mother sitting on the table, smoking. We had rolled our eyes and laughed. Her laugh almost sound too real, her face looked too young, than the last time I had saw her. And somehow, I could sense the joy, as if it was bouncing, striking at me like the hot rays of the sun. I moved closer to her, attracted to her warm eyes and laugh, and she hugged me. She dipped her index finger to the frosting and touched my nose with it. I giggled, and did the same, but missed her nose and had smeared it on her lips. She laughed. She got to her knees and took me in her arms, and I hugged her back, her love makes me want to melt.
"Wake up...wake up." She whispered. And just like that I woke up from my nap. And I woke up, still in the kitchen, my mother's friends talking loudly and laughing. Then, I remembered, seeing a light, a faint light, that l thought I might be seeing things. But then, my grandmother appeared. Sitting on the chair next to me. She blew the three candles I had placed. She smiled, "Thank you for the cake." She reached to me and brushed the back of her hand to my cheek. Her touched felt warm, but almost burned my skin.
"Grandma?"
"Yes darling. Don't cry now. I'm here, always."
"Grand-" She placed a finger to my lips. "Shh." Then she disappeared.
I blinked, coming back to my empty kitchen, the cake stared at me. But the cake looked different. Now, there was small piece of it missing, and there was heart drawn on the cake.
"Thank you for the cake." A whispered came. The voice familiar to me.
I smiled. "Grandma?"
"That's me." She laughed.
