I slam a plate of food on a couple's table.

"Enjoy," I say, with a sarcastic smile.

The couple dive into their burgers. I saunter over to the diner's big, floor-to-ceiling window, next to the entry door. Outside, four boys on skateboards zoom by, not looking back.

"Lynn, have you ever wondered about those boys? The ones that skate by here everyday?" I ask my co-worker.

Lynn glances out the window. The boys are gone. "No. Those boys will get you in trouble, Quinn." She sets down a glass of juice. "You need to get to school or your father will tan your hide."

"Please, he wouldn't lay a hand on me. Bye, Lynn!" I wave.

I walk to school after my morning shift at the diner, Siren's. I only work there to help my dad pay the bills. Ever since my dad became unemployed, I had to support myself and Eddie, my dad. If anyone found out, it would be the death of me.

When I got to Mission Bay High, the four skater boys exchange glances at me. I keep my head down.

"Yo, Diner Boy! Come here!" the short one yells.

I walk over to them with my head down. "Yeah?"

The other three start snickering, trying to keep themselves together. The one who called me over tells them to shut up.

"What's your name, Diner Boy?" he says as he slowly caresses my chin. I start to feel uncomfortable.

I lower his hand. "Kellin Quinn. And please, don't call me Diner Boy."

The other three can't seem to stop laughing. I start to think there's some sort of joke that I'm butt of. I regret coming over here.

"I'm Vic," he holds out a smooth, caramel-colored hand. "That's my brother, Mike," he points to the tallest out of the three. "That's Jaime, the one with the hair of a startled porcupine."

We all start laughing.

"And finally, Tony."

"Pleasure," I say.

The three start laughing again. Vic looks at them, then back at me. "Sorry, these three are real pricks. Will you three quit it? So rude. They thought you were checking me out while we passed the diner," he smiles. "Anyway, we'll see you around, Diner Boy."

"My name's Kellin. You can even call me Quinn if you want! Just don't call me Diner Boy!" I yell as the boys skate down the hall.

I read the patch on the back of Vic's jacket.

We will bring the tidal wave and nothing will remain.

That was the motto of a notorious gang. The Misadventures.

Oh God.

"You met one of the Misadventures?" Lynn asks with a quizzical look.

"Not just one of them. Four of them. Vic, Mike, Tony, and Jaime, They're the ones I was telling you about this morning. The skater boys," I tell her.

She stands up, "Speak of the devil."

It was Vic and his boys. In the diner that I just so happened to work at. I thought I was gonna pass out. Lynn runs up to them before I get the chance.

"Party of four?" she asks.

Vic smiles. "You know it, doll face."

Lynn scoffs as I survey from another table. She hands out menus. "Quinn will be your server today." She smiles painfully. "Enjoy."

Now I have to serve gang members. This will look great on my resume.
