Chapter XX
Mason (I did Marvin last time so why the heck not do Mason?)
I knew I sounded like a whimp when I yelled but what was before me truley scared the living Daylights out of me. Catalina. On all fours. And black smoke swallowing her.
At first, she had accidentally slashed my hand deeply. After she looked down, a small sliver of the smoke crawled onto my hand from her's. It grew into an agonizing stinging and I had to let go. Cat was terrified and probably raging in pain, tears streaming down her eyes, as the haze became thicker. I felt so helpless, just watching her suffer that way. Then I lost it.
I ran to her, and ignored the sharp needles cuting my skin. My hand reached for hers and held there. Her face was still turned to the ground and her sobs were still audible.
"Cat!" Her head tilted upward slightly.
"Ma-Mas-son." Her voice raspy and broken. What was happening?
"Cat. You need to wake up!"
"Ma-s-son." Now her tone had changed into a deeper voice. It finaly dawned on me what was happening.
In my second year at Camp Jupitor, I remember reading a mythology book on different spirits. Near the end of the book, was a page on eidolons; possessing spirits. I read that when a soul is caught by a eidolon, they are enveloped in black smoke and their eyes would change from their original color to gold.
"Cat? Cat, please look at me!" Her head jerked upward and, like the book had said, her eyes were no longer their Blue-Green-Grey selves. They were a cold, metalic, gold.
"Mason!" She screamed in her normal tone. Suddenly she was, by some force, thrown across the feild. As fast as my legs could take me, I ran to her. She was on her side and the smoke began to fade away to nothing. I knelt beside her.
"Cat?" No response.
"Cat!" Still nothing.
"Mason!" I recognize that voice anywhere, but it wasn't the one I needed to hear. I turned around and saw Marvin and Irena coming at full speed towards us. Irena went white when she saw Cat. She quickly ran to her side, opposite of me, and placed a hand on her wrist. As she checked her, I turned to Marvin.
"Mase, what in Jupiter's name-"
"Marvin. She was possessed by a eidolon."
Then Marvin's face matched Irena's.
"Dude, what happened?"
"The black smoke closed her in and her eyes went gold. And somehow, she got thrown halfway across the-"
"Guys?" I had almost forgoten that Irena was still there. Her voice was so quiet but something was defiantly wrong.
"What Irena?"
"Her h-heart beat. It s-stopped. B-But came back and on and off. She's not dead. At least n-not for a while." Her eyes were on the brink of tears. This was her best friend and she might not make it.
Without thinking twice, I picked up Cat and began to run to New Rome. Not far behind me, I heard Irena and Marvin in pursuit. Hopefully Reyna would know what to do.
We reached the principia and found Reyna standing near a bookshelf, with Legends of Mythical Curses in hand. As I ran in, her head shot around, eyes wide.
"What happened, soldier?"
"Eidolons. Attack ferocity from one to ten, ten." Her eyes darted around the room for something important.
"Lay her over there," she ordered, pointing to a nearby couch. I ran to it and gently placed Cat down. The left side of her face was badly bruised, as well as her arm. Reyna rushed over with some ambrosia and a vial filled with a mysterious liquid which foamed when it was open.
"Don't look!" She yelled as she poured a drop onto Cat's forehead. She suddenly began to glow so brightly, it was in my best mind not to look. As I felt the light fade, I heard a whimpering noise. I turned around just intime to see a black blob evaporate into mist and Cat's normal eyes flutter open.
