SOPHIA'S POV:
Supply runs were risky, very risky. You had to run as fast as possible, avoiding all contact with the Nappas. Infected people coming towards the final stages of the virus when they would just freeze up for days at a time, highly contagious and if one of them woke up from their "nap" (hence the name, I know) and caught sight of you... you better run for your life. They were pretty much Smeagol's older and a lot more deadly cousins but without all of the "my precious" business, more grunting and more well dead.
Supplies today are short, we have tried as long as we can without a supply run due to the increased amount of Nappas in our area. Since us youngsters are faster and less likely to be infected we are the sacrificial lambs you could say to go get supplies. We couldn't last any longer without supplies so we had to move soon. There are three teens in our "camp" along with about six adults, Aaron, Hayley and I are the teens at camp. Hayley and I have been stuck together since we were at school, so naturally we are best friends, while Aaron is a bit older and doesn't talk much, very "down to earth" kinda guy.
"Grab the packs we don't have all day" Aaron grunts from the corner of the supply room where all our packs are. "We need food, water, medication and anything else we need. Need not want guys"
"Oh come on! Sorry that I wanted some of the makeup that was right next door! Get over it" Hayley snaps
"Oh yea? How did that work out for us after about five Nappas almost caught us? Hmm?" Aaron replies with a glare
"They didn't even see-"
"Shut up both of you before dress you both as a lettuce and feed you to the snails, it will be a very slow death..." I interrupt them both, before it gets out of hand.
Hayley laughs while Aaron just rolls his eyes and glares.
Grabbing our packs and makeshift knives we leave the supply room and go towards the balcony on the second floor of the barricaded house, but not before saying goodbye to everyone and double checking our list was correct.
"Be careful Sophia, please." Mum says with a worried expression on her face like always.
"I always am." I reply as I walk to the balcony and jump onto the terracotta roofs of the abandoned houses next to our barricaded house or camp you could call it.
As we approach the final rooftop we all scope out the sloping hill down to the town littered with abandoned cars, trash and probably anything else you could think of.
"We should go the longer route through the back alley between the houses" Aaron suggests, staring towards the right side where the alley is.
"But that way is longer and then we risk blowing our cover, not only that but how are we going to get back to camp with the supplies!" Hayley argues
"Guys.... Lets just go the normal route quick and easy" I say quickly
"Fine." Aaron grunts
"Lets go then" Hayley says
Jumping down off the roof and running over to the street littered with cars we all hide behind a car and scope out the area. I turn to Aaron and hold up the all good sign which he nods in response with and then turn to Hayley who gives a nod as well. People always think that Hayley and I are related due to our same long dark hair, tanned skin, and tall physique, the only difference is that I have green eyes and Hayley has blue.
We all sprint down the hill towards the centre of town before we veer of to the left using the building and cars for cover when we hear them. Nappas. The shuffling and groaning is unmistakable. We exchange a quick panicked glance and each sprint towards a place to hide. Aaron runs into a shop, Hayley under a car while I scramble up the nearest tree with enough foliage to cover me. Thankfully its only one Nappa yet the sight of it sends a shiver down my spine. The bald patches of hair with blood stains on whatever clothes it had, a missing arm probably due to the gangrene and both eyeballs missing from their sockets. Something straight out of a nightmare. It slowly shuffles down the side street and into one of the empty shops.
Hayley soon crawls out from under the car, Aaron walks out of the shop and I jump down from the tree before we all break into a sprint and head towards the abandoned supermarket. The glass door is shattered and shelves tipped over everywhere as we carefully walk inside avoiding getting any cuts or scrapes. Hayley groaning at the sight of her now ruined pants.
"Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed." Aaron states
"Ok Hayley and I will grab food, Aaron grab whatever else if on the list." I whisper
Aaron nods and we slowly walk around the supermarket. Hayley and I head straight for the canned foods and shove them carefully into her pack trying not to make noise.
"Hey Soph?" Hayley asks quietly
"Yea?" I turn to look at her
"Have you noticed there are not many Nappas here. There are usually tons more! Like a lot more than one?"
"Yea I was wondering that. Maybe they are moving on? Shuffling to another part of town?" I reply
"I don't know. I just have a weird feeling about it I guess."
"Let's just get out of here quickly then." As i turn to grab some more cans.
We walk towards where the water bottles are and grab most of them but also a few energy drinks and sneak a couple chocolates in two. Hey! I cant help it chocolate is the best!
"Aaron?" Hayley whisper shouts out
"Can you be any more loud? Really? I'm surprised that you haven't attracted all the Nappas in town." He says as he comes around the corner
"What did you grab?" I ask
"Umm, medical supplies, rope, a couple flashlights and batteries." He says as he rummages through his pack.
"We should head to that old clothing warehouse. We need more clothes anyways" Hayley suggests
We all agree and sprint across the street to the warehouse and walk in.
"Grab what you need and lets get out of here, this place gives me the creeps" Hayley says glancing nervously at her watch, "It's almost 3pm and we need to leave before the sun goes down"
We all split up and grab some clothes, I grab some leggings, tops, socks, and a new pair of trainers, and other essentials.
"Umm guys? I think a storm is coming." Aaron calls out
We run and meet him at the edge of the store and look out to the massive black looking clouds tumbling across the sky towards us.
"No shit sherlock." I quip
We all shove whatever clothes we have into our packs and sprint towards the hill we came down just in time to see a pack Nappas that have "woken up" groaning and screaming run towards camp.
We all sprint towards the back alley and jump onto the roofs and run as fast as possible up the roofs towards the camp where you can hear screaming inside the house. I look into the balcony window in time to see my mother get grabbed by a Nappa and to see her tumble back with a scream.
I charge into the building through the balcony into the room and see about five of them standing in the room with half of the adults lying dead ripped apart. But no Nappas to be seen until i turn the corner and see three of them facing the other way when i charge at them and kick one down the stair and hear a crack when he lands, thrust my knife into the skull of the other and look up in time to see the last one's arms out trying to grab me so I duck and sweep my legs underneath it's and pull the knife out of the second ones skull and into the last ones.
Panting I look up to see Hayley and Aaron downstair fighting off the ones left in the house as I look around screaming for my mother. I rush downstair to see a Nappa, the one we saw in town bite into her neck and see the life draining from my mothers eyes.
