Before stepping out of the taxi, i hand the man who picked me up at O'hare a 100 dollar bill.
"Keep the change," I say stumbling out and picking up the few bags i have out of the trunk of the taxi. As soon as i have all my bags i take in the smell of my new, but still old, city. Chicago. The Windy City really is a good name for it, with my hair blowing around everywhere i decide to step into the new apartment building. Walking into the building i was mesmerized, bya fountain and ladies professionaly dressed, rich mothers with their babies dressed in Gucci, only to be pulled out of my dazed state by none other than, my mother.
"Libby! oh Liz baby how do you like it? Lovely isnt it? Did you miss Chicago?" Here we go.
"Hi mom, I love being back, but i have to go work after i drop off my bags and-"
"Oh dont be stupid Elizabeth, I already took care of it, called Dr. Sleater and everything. You dont have to work until tomorrow, so what do you say we go around the city? Navy Pier, shopping, the whole nine yards?" She was either really excited for me to be back from Dallas or there was a trick up her sleave, and knowing my mother, it was probably the second option.
"Mother i dont know, i need to get settled and besides i'll be living in the city, there'll be plenty of time for going sight seeing later, besides its not like i need to go sight seeing, i grew up here, remember?" This was true, but after years in a different city, without any trips back i felt like i was on a different planet.
"Oh Libby please, i promise i wont be too terrib-"
"Mother! please dont," she looked shocked by my outbreak, but only for a second, quickly recovering and turning into the rich sophisticated lawyer she was. all i wanted was a cigarette to be honest.
"Right, well," she said slapping he hand on her thighs "if you need me, you know where to find me sweets" and she was off with two kisses, one on each cheek.
Finally it was time to enjoy my new life, in the one place i loved, Chicago.
