I watched as the final breathes of day disappeared into the void of night. The night was empty as the cover of darkness reached it's tendrils towards the edges of the earth meeting the last light of the setting sun. As the sun vanished, I was left alone with the vacant sky. The city near the edge of the earth, began to bloom to life with light. The city was known for it's brilliance of light. The cities light could compete with even that of the stars in the heavens. It is because of this, the stars never shine here. Some believe that long ago the Goddess of the night, The Star Keeper, took them. For as the world began to produce it's own light The Star Keeper felt the world no longer appreciated her gift of starlight. So, she emptied the heavens and hid the stars away in the horizon. I had grown up hearing the myth of The Star Keeper. My mom would tell me that if you journey to the edge of the earth under nightfall you will find where the stars are hidden in the sky. To those the Goddess deem worthy she will grant a star. I had feared I would never know if the story was true for no one ever left the lights of the city under nightfall, except for myself.
I was journeying towards the horizon in search of where the earth stopped and the sky began. as I neared the edge, stars one by one began to dimly shine through the pitch. I had to stop suddenly as I realized I had reached an end. One more step and I would fall into an abyss below. Stretched for miles in front of me was nothing but sky. As I stood atop the mighty cliff I gazed up at the twinkling of the stars. As I did the world around me slowly started to fill with a dazzling array of dancing starlight. Eyes squinting I attempted to peer up at the majesty above. The sky shined with such newfound brilliance I became overwhelmed with wonderment. I stood in awe as the stars started to fall from the clusters of light above me, piercing through the darkness below. I held out my hands and as I did a star gracefully landed in my palms. A woman's voice echoed bouncing off the light around me. I had been blessed with a gift from The Star Keeper. I bowed thankfully to the Goddess and held the star close to my heart as I carried it with me back to the city.
I climbed atop the tallest building I could find and released the star into the barren night sky. It elegantly ascended through the air before resting gently in its place in the night. As I descended from the top of the building and strolled down the street below I noticed the world seemed at a standstill. The bustling city had come to a pause, everyone was looking up with wonderment. The people around the me murmured questions of excitement and confusion. Observing this I had an idea, I stood up high and exclaimed to the city, "You must turn off all of your lights!" The people of the street stared at me in disbelief. I pointed towards my star in the sky and exclaimed once more my command. I began to run through the streets shouting for everyone to turn off their lights. The brilliant lights of the city went dim as the residence extinguished them.
The Star Keeper stirred from her place in the sky as she watched the city go dark. She smiled down on the place and leaped across the sky leaving a trail of glittering light behind her. The people of the city cheered as the sky filled with wondrous starlight.
