Chapter 6
It was a sunny Tuesday afternoon as Eliza made her way up to the front door of her apartment building. She carried her backpack on her left shoulder and had her phone in her right hand, texting as she walked. She was definitely distracted when she bumped into Luc.
“Pardon, mon ami.” Eliza quickly apologized.
“Pas de problem,” he responded. “Your french is getting better Eliza, if only you could walk without running into me all of the time,” he laughed as he grabbed her shoulders in an attempt to steady her, then he kissed her cheek. Eliza beamed at the sight of Luc. They had been spending all of their free time together, and each time she saw him her heart would skip a beat. Luc felt the same way. Their brief encounter had turned into a friendship, which had instantly turned into a crush and now, after a period of dating, they were ready for the next step.
“Ha ha ha Luc, you’re so incredibly funny” exaggerated Eliza, rolling her eyes in the process.
Luc found her sarcastic sense of humour adorable. He enjoyed how she would take a romantic gesture and turn it into a cynical moment.
Last month when they were at the Louvre, enjoying a day surrounded by million dollar masterpieces, Eliza would comment how she had similar artwork at home.
“I have a finger painting from kindergarten that looks just like that one over there.” She pointed to a Picasso. Luc knew she was the one for him when they stood in front of the Mona Lisa. As they gazed upon the woman with the mysterious smile, Luc could hear a faint voice.
“Oh hello handsome”. Eliza with her lips perched together, and talking out of the left side of her mouth, like a ventriloquist, proceeded to speak on behalf of the portrait. “Come closer, and I will tell you a secret”.
Luc could not stop laughing. He turned away from the painting and focused only on Elisa’s smile.
The same smile adorned Eliza’s face now as it did the day at the museum.
“So, I need a favour.” Eliza reminded herself.
“Shoot.” Luc replied
“I have a few boxes left in my room that I need help moving, interested?”
“Sure, why not, when will you be needing my services?” Inquired Luc
“Hmm, well why don’t you come for dinner at 6:00pm and then after you can help me.” Eliza shrugged.
“Sounds good, I’ll be there”
Eliza nodded her head and waved goodbye to Luc.
The elevator ride was short, which made Eliza happy.
She moved along lightly to her apartment greeting her mother and Benson in the kitchen.
“Hey mom, hey Ben.”
“Hi sweetie, how was school?”
“Alright I guess, how was your day?” Eliza responded grasping a cold bottle of water and taking a sip. The chill liquid glided down Eliza’s throat making her smile with satisfaction.
“It was good dear, Benson has some news .”
“I got a 99% on my math exam.” Benson grinned triumphantly.
“Nice job bud.” Eliza gave Benson a high five.
“By the way Luc is coming for dinner,” she announced.
“Wonderful, what are you making?,” Mrs. Rivers cracked a smile.
“Please don’t embarrass me?” Eliza begged.
“Okay okay, oh and your father will not be home for dinner s0 I guess it will just be the four of us!” Mrs. Rivers clapped her hands.
Eliza frowned. Mr. Rivers was hardly home, the only time they really got to talk and see each other, was over dinner. Eliza locked herself in her room doing the last bit of homework she had left until Luc came.
Mrs. Rivers and Benson enjoyed when Luc visited. They would spend hours talking about the differences between North American customs and how the French lived.
Luc would tell stories about his family and how he was raised. Eliza would tilt her head, hanging on his every word. She loved everything about him.
After dinner Eliza and Luc excused themselves from the table and made their way to Eliza’s room. She showed him the boxes that needed to be moved to the storage closet.
“I can’t believe they have been sitting in the corner of my room for all of this time.” she shook her head. “Finally, I can get rid of them.”
“What about this box?” Luc questioned pointing to the brown cardboard box labeled ‘Memories’
“You can put that on by my closet for now.” she informed Luc. Just as she turned to motion to him she heard her named being called.
“Eliza!” Mrs. Rivers yelled from the living room.
“I’ll be right back Luc.”
Eliza was out of her bedroom before he could say ‘ok’. So Luc did what he was told and carried the box over to the closet, but just his luck, he stumbled and fell. The box landed on the ground and everything inside came out. Luc grunted and got up to put everything that came out, back inside the box. He couldn't help but notice the pictures that were inside the box. It was pictures of Eliza with a different guy in each photo. Luc couldn't help but wonder who they were. Inside the box were some drawings of Eliza’s and some pictures of her family but one thing caught his eye. ‘Journal’ was written on the cover of a blue faded book. Luc talked himself into opening the book. It was all Eliza’s inner thoughts and experiences. The first couple of pages she was writing about a Brandon. He found out they had to breakup because she was moving. Then there was Liam.
They also broke up because she was moving. He kept on reading. Luc didn’t even notice Eliza’s presence until she spoke.
“What are you doing?” Eliza wore a worried expression. Luc’s head shot up to see Eliza standing in front of him. He dropped the blue book and stuffed it into the box with the other items.
“I need to go.” Luc stood up abruptly while picking up his jacket, shoving past Eliza. Eliza stood there, like she was frozen to her spot. She watched Luc, just wishing he would come back.
