Annelies Marie Frank was born on June 12th 1929 in Frankfurt am Maine in Germany. Anne lived with her sister Margot Betti Frank, her mother Edith Hollander Frank and her father Otto H. Frank. The Frank family lived in Germany until Anne was four. During that time Germany was facing financial problems after losing the first world war. The Nazi party ran by Adolf Hitler claimed they had a solution, and in 1933 they won the Frankfurt muncipal elections. Edith and Otto worried about their future when Jews were getting blamed for the problems that the country was facing Otto and Edith knew that this was not good.
After the Nazi party won the Frankfurt muncipal elections in 1933 Otto made arrangements to flee Germany and move to Amsterdam where Otto's business Opketa (Opketa specialised in making jam products etc) was, whilst he went to Amsterdam to get the business off the ground Edith and the children went to Aachen to stay with Edith's mother. eventually Edith joined her husband in Amsterdam in September, then Margot went to Amsterdam around December and Anne arrived in Amsterdam in February. Edith never really felt at home in Amsterdam and had trouble learning the dutch language, so she would often read or do housework to take her mind off things, one of Anne's friends noted that her mother spoke with a very strong german accent. Otto wasn't at home often as he was busy working hard trying to get Opketa successful and well known, so Edith was often alone during the day.
As soon as Anne arrived in Amsterdam they started going to the Montessori nursery school, where Anne stayed until she was six years old she then started in the first form. Her father said: "It was important that Anne went to the Montessori school, because everyone was treated like an individual."
