It starts off faint, faint enough for me to bare it. However as time goes on it gets louder and louder and soon enough the screeching enters my room and I crushed by two small bodies. I let out a groan as an elbow digs into my stomach and I push the two bodies off me and open my eyes to see my new, younger stepbrothers, Justin, 10 and Paxton, 6.
"Guys, we've spoke about this. Stop jumping on me every morning!" I exclaim, letting my head all back on my warm pillow.
"Mum and Ray wanted us to wake you, they want to have a family breakfast before your first day at school." Justin says and I look at him and nod.
"OK, tell them to give me 15-20 minutes." I say and they both nod running out and screaming down to their mum and my dad. I let out a sigh and walk over to my wardrobe and grab what I want to wear before getting changed.
Before putting my hat on, I french braid my hair. Once it's done, I place my hat on and walk downstairs. It isn't like my dad and I's old house, when it was just us, we had a 2 bedroom house where it literally took a minute to get to each room, now we're in a 8 bedroom house and it takes a minute to get from the top of the stairs to the bottom. Once I'm at the bottom, I head into the dining room, where Pancakes, Waffles, Fruit and Orange Juice has been set up and everyone is already tucking in.
"Hailey, good morning! How'd you sleep?" Cataleya asks and I nod.
"Yeah good thanks." Now I know what your thinking. I bet your thinking Cataleya is the awful stepmother and Justin and Paxton are the younger, male replacements of the ugly stepsisters, but it's not like that. Cataleya is actually a really nice person, the only reason it's so awkward between us, if because she's the first person my father has been with since my mum passed almost 11 years ago and they married after just a year of dating. And we don't have a lot in common.
"So, are you excited for your first day at school?" She asks, dishing up a plate and handing it to me. I smile thanking her and then shrug my shoulder.
"It's school, excitement isn't really a word I associate with it at all. I'm intrigued to see what it's like, I just get the feeling I'm going to be that cliche new girl, who sticks out like a sore thumb. Attentions not really my thing." I respond and she nods her head.
"Well, pal, they'll love you." My dad comments and I smile.
"You're kind of obliged to say that. You're my dad." I counter and he grunts pulling a funny face, which makes everyone at the table, including myself laugh.
"Mum, can we get a ride to school with Hailey today?" Justin asks.
"Not today. We need to make sure Hailey isn't late on her first day. Maybe next week, if that's OK with her?" She says, ending it more like a question for me.
"Sure, no problem." I answer and Justin cheers. We all finish up breakfast and I grab my bag and walk out the door. Justin and Paxton say goodbye as they jump into their mum's car and my dad stops me before I get into mine.
