Follow the Rules

I'm Emma. The year is 3031. I'm 15 years old.

We recently elected our 298th President of the United States, named William Hallaway. The equality movement has been going off the charts recently. Not everyone agrees with it, so they don't follow it, which is fine. President Hallaway thinks otherwise. He believes in 100% equality. I'm the only child in a family of three. There's my mom, my dad, and me. I've had a pretty normal life until recently.

Today is March 3, 3031. I walked into school just like normal, sat in my seat, and started doing my bell ringer when President Hallaway started speaking on the intercom.

"Good morning, students, I have an announcement. Today is a special day! It's your first day with clones!" Groans spread across the classroom along with a few gasps and outcries.

When he was elected, he mentioned clones, but everyone thought it was a joke. Then in came the clones, in alphabetical order into the class. My full name is Emma Elise Adams, so there was no way that mine wasn't coming in first.

I'm considered a genetic mutation, I have blonde hair and blue eyes. I definitely don't stick out of the group because a lot of people have blonde hair just like me.

Right as I was trapped in my thoughts, a blonde haired girl that looked just like me walked in. She scanned around the room, and in 10 seconds of doing so, she found me and sat in the seat to my left.

She finally turned to me and said, "Hello, my name is Emma Adams. Nice to meet you."

"That's my name, how about I call you E?" I asked, trying to compromise even though I wanted her to find a completely different name to call her own.

"I'm sorry, but we have to share the same name in order to be equal."

I don't understand why we have to be assigned clones, but we get to keep our birth names. I bet that's Hallaway's next move. I tried not to look at E because she looked exactly like me except she had green eyes in comparison to my blue. Aren't clones supposed to be exactly like the person they're made to look like? I wonder if everyone's have a physical feature that they don't have.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been a week and let me tell you, the clones are boring and predictable. My best friend: Max is a fairly handsome guy with brown hair, brown eyes, and a freckle above his lip. The clone on the other hand, doesn't have the freckle. All of the clones have a defective physical feature that we don't have. I thought they were here to make sure there was no individuality physically, but I'm not so sure. E has corrected me on my everyday jokes I make and the talents I have. For example, the other day I sat down at lunch with Max and set a spoon on my nose, then she said, "Emma, you shouldn't do that because not everyone can. You don't want them to feel bad, do you?" Every time she tells me to stop doing something because 'its not an act of equality', my automatic response is to tell her that I don't care, which get me in trouble with Hallaway. I swear, she has that guy on speed dial.

I fell asleep today in class, so I was sent to the office. E sends me here so often, it might as well be put on my daily agenda at this point. Just as I was about to knock on the door, I heard President Hallaway speaking to Mr. Herman; my principal. Why is Hallaway here? Me, being the nosy person that I am, stopped in my tracks and listened.

"A few of your students are starting to create problems," said Mr. Hallaway.

"I assure you sir, they are very well behaved students, they're just having trouble adjusting," Mr. Herman replied, his voice full of worry.
