"DIANA!"
The boy called, as darkness continued envelope the castle-like manor house, like a thick, black coat, shielding it from the outside world.
The boy was no more than ten years old, though he was extremely good looking, tall, with platinum blond curls that rested against his sturdy forehead. The darkness concealed his deep set blue eyes, searching for his sister.

"Di, mother wants you to come inside, now!" called Evan Rosier.

A small rustle came from the far end of the elder bush, and Evan hurried towards it. He could see his sister now. Even in the growing night, her vibrant auburn hair gave her away.
She was lying, face up in the clearing of birches. She tensed at her brother's approach, but her eyes stayed transfixed on the open sky.
"Come on." he nudged her gently, "You'll catch your death outside like this."
When she made no reply, he sighed in exasperation and perched on the grass by her side, under the painted sky.

"There's so many," the girl spoke after a while, "Has anyone counted them all?"
Evan grunted. "No."
"How do you know?"
"Does it matter?" He was growing impatient now, the cold made him tired and wary.
He wished that his sister would get over with her rambling, so they could go back inside, into the warmth of the firelight.
"You can go inside. Don't wait for me." said Diana, as if reading his thoughts. The brisk autumn air didn't bother her. Nothing did, as long as she was with the stars. They glowed brighter, as the velvet sky fell to pitch black, their shapes imprinted onto her eyelids when she blinked. One speck shone particularly bright, drawing her eye towards it. A diamond between spilled silver flecks. She reached a small, pearly hand towards it, as if she could touch it, draw it from the sky.

"No." Evan snapped, "Mother will kill me. And you, if we don't go home now." He yanked the girl's arm so that she finally gave in. And she trailed behind him, past the young birch trees, past the overgrown elder hedge and the uneven gnome burrows.
Somewhere, a fountain played in the pale moonlight.

She saw the diamond-like star in her mind all the way home.
