Willa blinked once, holding back a snort at the bizarre question. It should have been very obvious that they were here to take back what he had stolen from them. With a disapproving shake of her head, she looked at his brother to see his reaction.

Before Justin could do anything though, Roxy ran forward, her fiery red hair swaying behind her. She raised her hand and grabbed the necklace, pulling it from Scott’s hands with a surprising force.

The other four people in the diner including the terror stricken waitress watched the scene unfold with mouths agape. Willa couldn’t help but admire Roxy’s courage as she watched her stomp her feet onto the ground with a shriek.

“You have the nerve to ask?” She shouted, squeezing the diamonds in her palm possessively. “Of course we followed you here to get my necklace back.”

The waitress let out a whimper after Roxy’s declaration, shaking like a leaf. “Deputy Caron, I need to call the Sheriff.” She croaked out, avoiding the eyes fixed on her.

After earning a nod from the intoxicated man, she scurried away immediately. Her words echoed on Willa’s mind even after she disappeared into what seemed to be the kitchens, and Willa beat everyone to asking the inevitable.

“What does she mean by deputy? You’ve gotta be kidding me.”

Scott opened and closed his mouth like a fish, not being able to give a response. He was saved by the waitress who had just burst back in looking like she had seen a ghost. “Sheriff Landers must be on his way.” She said, eyeing the group with apparent fear.

As soon as she finished her sentence, red and blue lights flashed outside the window and they heard a car stop in front of the building. Using Scott’s temporary surprise, Roxy hurried back to Justin’s side as if she couldn’t believe she had just confronted the dangerous man on her own.

The door swung back with a ring and a tall man entered, not even paying attention to where he was heading. He only looked up after he took a couple of steps inside and immediately spotted the terrified waitress looking at him pleadingly.

“What did he do this time?” He asked the afraid girl, his voice hinting that it was not his first time to clean up his deputy’s mess.

The waitress could only make a moaning sound as her eyes involuntarily found the intruders. The Sheriff took the hint and followed the girl’s gaze to the clueless foursome, a scowl spreading on his lips at the sight that greeted him.

“Scott!” His voice boomed in the almost empty room, making everyone flinch. “What the hell is going on here?”

Willa saw Scott try to shrink into a dark corner of the room, almost pretending to be invisible. Glancing at her shocked friends, she stepped forward after placing a hopefully calm expression on her face. It wouldn’t do anyone good to act like a bunch of cowards.

“Your deputy stole my friend’s necklace, sir. We came here to get it back and we were gonna leave after that but the waitress insisted on calling you.” She explained, her voice not wavering once.

Roxy angrily opened her mouth probably to complain about the deputy but Justin silenced her by grabbing her arm warningly. Giving a grateful look to her brother, Willa again turned his attention to the Sheriff.
