Tris
Chapter 20
I wake up, and have no idea where I am. How did I get here? I sit up, pain bolting through my body. My vision goes black, and I feel like I'm going to vomit. Once I can see again, the room is spinning, so I shut my eyes, wishing I was lying in Tobias's chest.
"Tobias!" I scream, hoping he will hear me, even though I doubt he will. I have to find him.
I stand up, falling shortly afterwards. Dizziness makes the room spin again, so I close my eyes, willing it to go away.
When I finally open them, I see a black pair of shoes, standing on the white tiles. Am I dead? No, I can't be; I wouldn't feel this much pain if I were dead.
I look up to see a figure, not being able to make out details because the lights are so bright. While my eyes adjust, I can make out some small features: short blonde hair, vibrant green eyes, and barely taller than I am.
"Who are you?" I ask the women. "Where's Tobias? If you did anything to him, I swear I'll kill-" She laughs, and says,"I'm Georgia, head of the divergence. No need for threats Beatrice. Tobias is fine. I'm just trying to help you."
All the puzzle pieces come together, and I remember why I am here. "I need to get to him, now! Where is he?" I slowly get on my feet, and feel sharp pain in my leg. "Take me to him, please! And where are Alex and Liv?" Panic rushes through me. What if they didn't make it? I shake my head. Of course they made it, Tobias would guard them with his life.
"They are with Tobias. He wouldn't listen to my offer until you were with him." I raise my eyebrows. "What offer?" Georgia smiles, and says,"I'll take you to him, and we'll discuss it together." I nod, knowing whatever this deal is, it must be big.
When we get to the room where Tobias sits, holding Alex and Liv, relief runs through me. They're all fine, I think to myself. Thank god.
Tobias flashes me a smile, and asks,"How are you doing beautiful?" I kiss him, happy to be near him again. His fingers trace up my face, and eventually run into my hair. "Better, now that I'm with you." I rest my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Thump, thump, thump. I don't know why, but this has always calmed me.
"What was this deal about?" Tobias asks, breaking the silence. "We plan to destroy Erudite, before the attacks get worse. We want you to join us."
I look at Tobias, who's dark eyes are staring at me. "Can we talk this over?" I ask. Georgia nods, and walks out of the room.
"Do you want to do it?" I ask. He furrows his brow in concentration. Finally, he says,"Yes, but we can't leave Alex and Liv." I nod, and move my hands to his waist. "I know. Tobias, we can't leave them. I don't know what to do."
His hand moves under my chin, and he points my head upward. "Hey, it's going to be okay," he whispers. His voice is soft, but reassuring.
I don't realize I'm crying until he wipes my tears away.
I take Liv from Tobias, and cradle her in my arms. "I love you, no matter what." I remember when my mom told me that at the Choosing Ceremony. The thought of her fills me with grief.
"Should we do it?" Tobias shakes his head. "If something happens to us, they will be alone. We can't do that to them." I nod. He's right.
Georgia walks in, and asks,"What is your decision?" I look down at Liv, who has fallen asleep. "We have decided not to, because if we die, Alex and Liv will have no one." Tobias says this firmly, rocking Alex in his arms. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.
Georgia nods, and smiles. "I'd figure you'd say that." I realize that they are barely a week old, and have already been through so much.
When we walk out, Georgia gives us a room where we can stay. We thank her, and head up.
Once we get to our room, Tobias says,"Baby, how is your arm and leg feeling?" They hurt a lot, but all I say is,"They hurt a little, but will be better after I sleep."
I walk over to him, and lie my hand on his arm. "Is your arm okay?" he nods. "I probably just need sleep too."
We feed Alex and Liv, and then lie in bed. "I love you Tobias." He smiles, and says,"I love you too, Beatrice." I normally would be mad at him for calling me Beatrice, but I realize it's nice to hear my name once in awhile.
I close my eyes, and wonder what is going on ya Dauntless. Before I can ask Tobias about it, I fall into a deep sleep.
