The small town of Greenville, Oregon, had seen some pretty strange things over the millennia, but nothing as bizarre as a zombie apocalypse that popped out of nowhere like the unexpected burst of a balloon.
And to think it all started out so...normal...
~Friday September 15th, 1997, 24 hours before all hell broke loose~
Victoria Annabella Higgins weaved her way through the crowded hallways of Greenville High, "home of the fighting salamanders", her nose stuffed into a hardback copy of Stephen King's, "It". She kept her eyes glued to the novel as she walked at a steady pace to her AP Chemistry class. You see, Victoria didn't need to see to know where she was going. For example, someone threw a football into the air that came spiraling towards the girl. She moved to the right as the ball flew right to the spot where she was just standing and hit someone else in the back. One would say she was "psychic" or had some kind of "supernatural power".
But no, she was nothing more than a normal senior who was overly obsessed with anything paranormal.
Victoria continued down the hall until she came across the correct classroom. The AP Chem teacher, Mrs. Schumer, was right outside the door, greeting the students as they walked in, her arms crossed as she surveyed her pupils.
"Good morning, Miss Higgins," Mrs. Schumer said as Victoria walked into the classroom. A barely audible "morning" escaped from the girl's lips, but it was better than complete silence. Victoria went to the back of the classroom and sat down in her seat, her eyes still stuck on her book. The room began to fill up with more and more people. Among them was Brody Benson, the star quarterback of the school's football team, and Victoria's boyfriend. He sauntered over to the back of the room and kneeled down until he was eye-level with his girlfriend.
"You know, sometimes I think you love your books more than you love me," Brody joked, a smile forming on his face. Victoria's free hand grasped her boyfriend's, their fingers intwining.
"The best book in the world could never compare to you, Benson," she said, looking up from the words on the page. Most people wondered how the two ever got together. Most pointed out that they had completely different preferences and personalities. Others brought up the saying "opposites attract". However Victoria Higgins and Brody Benson became a thing, they had been together for two years.
The tardy bell let out a loud brrring', the cue for everyone to get to their seats and make sure they had everything. Victoria quickly put away her book as Mrs. Schumer closed the door and walked to the front of the classroom.
"Good morning, all! Please pull out your chemistry books and turn to page 423. Today we'll be doing a water to wine lab," Mrs. Schumer explained as she wrote down notes on the chalkboard. "No, Mr. Mortez, you will not be drinking it. I'm raising future chemists here, not future alcoholics." She added without turning around.
"Dammit," Leo Mortez cursed under his breath as his hand went down. The whole class giggled.
"Alright, kids! Please shift into groups of three and go to a lab table. All equipment is set out for you. Read the directions and get to work," Mrs. Schumer said as she set down the small piece of chalk.
~The end of the school day, 17 hours before all hell broke loose~
Victoria walked down the bus' steps and onto her driveway, book in hand. She heard the squeal of the doors and a groan of protest as the vehicle sped off. The girl followed the small stone path up to the front door and pulled a pair of keys out of her back pocket, eyes still glued tightly to her read. She opened the door with a welcoming click and walked inside. Her mom was dicing tomatoes, her dad was reading the papers, and her brother, Don, was playing Call of Duty on the TV. Mrs. Higgins looked up from her task and smiled at her daughter.
"Hello, dear! How was school?" She asked.
"Good, Mom," Victoria responded, plopping down into a chair. Her eyes moved swiftly from one word to another.
"What page you on, Vic?" Don asked from the living room.
"946."
"Didn't you just start that yesterday?"
"Yeah, so?"
"Have you ever put that book down?! Seriously, how do you keep your grades up?"
"I should be asking you the same question, Donny," she responded, closing the book, a smirk plastered to her face. "After all, I always see you playing stupid video games. At least I'm doing something smart." Don slammed the controller onto the couch and stood up.
"You know what, Victoria? It's a weekend! I don't have any homework or football practice, so I can do whatever I want!" He shot back, thrusting a finger at his sister.
"Now, now, if you keep yelling, there will be plenty of chores for the both of you!" Mrs. Higgins pointed out. Don sat back down in silent fury. Victoria let a triumphant smile creep onto her face as she felt her phone buzz in her back pocket. She took it out and the bright screen illuminated with a text from her best friend, Keegan Reynolds.
This cabin fever is KILLING me! Wanna drive around town for a bit tmrw?, it said. Victoria let her thumbs do the talking.
Sounds good to me. Wanna bring bf but I don't want u to feel like a third wheel :(, she said. Shortly after, Keegan texted back.
It's fine, Vic. Brods is cool so I don't mind :), it read. The girl's eyes lit up with excitement as she typed her next message.
Sounds like a plan. I'll pick u up @ noon
