Tobias

Chapter 21

Tris and I wake up to Alex and Liv crying. We make a silent agreement that Tris will feed the twins, and I will make us breakfast.

I find some bagels in the cupboard, and put them into the toaster. When they pop up, I grab them, and give one to Tris. "Sorry, there wasn't much to eat." "It's okay."

Once we're done eating, I pick up Alex and Liv, and say,"Sorry for everything that happened in the past few days. Mommy and I will try not to let it happen again." I pull them to my chest, and hug them.

Tris smiles. "You're a great father, Tobias. Don't even think for a second that you're like Marcus, because you're not." I smile. "Thanks. You're a great mom too."

Tris and I lie in bed all day because the doctor told her to walk as little as possible for the next few days. Her leg is swollen, almost twice the size it should be. The painkillers have worn off, and we can't get more because they are low on supplies here.

"How are you feeling?" I ask, hoping her leg doesn't hurt terribly. "It hurts, but I can live. How's your arm?" "It's fine, as long as I don't move it too much."

She nods, saying,"Why did Erudite attack? I hope the don't know that we escaped." I laugh, and Tris scowls. "What?" Her angry face is so cute. "Of course they'll know we escaped. They hate us. Remember, we shut down the last stimulation?" Tris frowns, takes Alex from me, and kisses his forehead. "Tobias, what about Alex and Liv?" She's crying now, her light blue eyes sparkling with tears. "Tris," I move toward her, so close that my lips brush hers while I say,"I'll protect them with my life." She lies on my shoulder, and whispers,"But what if I lose you?" Her watering eyes are staring into mine. "I'm not going to let that happen." I feel the words come out of my mouth, but it's not my voice. This voice is to grim to be mine.

After thinking for a few minutes, I say,"Tris, we'll leave here as soon as we can." She nods, and uses her leg to push closer to me.

Tris bites her lip, but doesn't say anything. "You okay?" Her eyes swell with tears, but she says,"Yep, it's nothing." "You sure? You don't look okay, beautiful." Her face is ghostly white, and she looks miserable. She looks down at her leg, answering my question. Blood is seeping through her stitches. I find a piece of cloth, and wrap it around her leg tightly.

"I'll be right back, okay?" "Please hurry." I kiss her quickly on the cheek, and then sprint out the door.

After climbing twenty flights of stairs, I reach the hospital. Why did they have to make this building so big? I find a nurse, and sprint up to her. Panting, I say,"Tris's...stitches...ripped...She..'s....bleeding." I'm breathing heavily, but my lungs still sting for air. "Room number?" It takes me awhile to answer because I can't catch my breath. Finally, I manage,"One...oh..four."

After a few minutes, nurses bring a bag and start down the stairs. I run, taking two steps at a time. I can normally run at this speed and easily get down twenty flights of stairs, but it's different when you've been shot in the arm and are sprinting as fast as you can.

I eventually get back to Tris, and the first thing I notice is her pale face. Both of her hands are wrapped around her leg, blood covering them. "Tobias." Her voice is weak, as if most life has been washed out of her. I put my fingers to her lips. "It's okay. You'll be fine." I move my hand to her leg, and it's freezing.

"Tobias, why is the room spinning?" Her eyes are full of confusion because she has lost to much blood to know what's going on. "Tris, just close your eyes." She obeys, while I pick up Alex and Liv and put them in their cribs.

The nurses come through the door, and quickly open their supplies bag. They pull out scissors and tweezers, and start to pull them out. Tris screams, and blood pours out of her leg. "Why are they cutting my leg open, Tobias?" She tries to move away from them, but she's too weak. "Tris, relax. They're taking out your stitches so they can put stronger ones in." Her face is so pale, it's almost white. The nurses are putting her new stitches in, and the bleeding is slowing. Blood is everywhere: on me, Tris, the nurses, and the bed sheets have huge spots of dark red.

Tris's stitches are in, and her leg bleeding has stopped. "Thank God." The nurses wrap her leg in gauze to keep pressure on the wound.

Before the nurses leave, they help me move her to another bed. Also, they tell me to let her rest for the next few days. I thank them, and they walk out the door.

I sit next to Tris, her face extremely pale, but starting to regain color. "Tris, do you need anything?" Her eyes are filled with tears, and I can imagine the pain she's in. "Nope. All I need is you to be here."

I climb in bed next to her, slowly to make sure I don't hurt her, and allow her to lie on my chest. "Sleep, Tris." She mumbles something that I don't understand, and falls to sleep. I close my eyes, holding Tris in my arms, and for now, I'm protecting her from every danger that threatens us from losing each other. But I can't help but think; Will it stay this way?
