Raven had tuned out the rest of the world around her and was fully immersed in her paperback novel. The warmth of the crackling fire seemed to seep into her bones; outside the snowflakes continued to twirl from the blackened sky accompanied by the howling of the wind. White Christmas lights were strung about the lobby and several snowboards rested against the walls. The noise level was relatively quiet save for the workers serving hot beverages and the humming conversations that guests had carried on with one another.

She was curled up on a crème colored couch in the lobby, her arm resting comfortably on a small pillow. The vacation getaway had been entirely her mother's idea as Raven herself despised the wintry weather and wasn't initially fond of skiing, not that her mother was either. The past three days had been filled with snow, endless music, and overly cheery guests but at least she had her hot chamomile tea.

"No more reading." The book Raven had been engrossed in was swiped out of her fingertips, "It's New Year's Eve. I brought you here to socialize and for fresh air."

The pale teenager was unimpressed with her mother's reasoning, "I didn't ask for this. I didn't want to come to a ski resort."

Raven strongly resembled her mother from the long black strands of hair that cascaded past their shoulders to the soft features of their faces. However, she also sported the features of her absent father such as her dark irises and stoic expression according to Arella.

"It would be good for you to socialize," Arella said, then continued when Raven had opened her mouth to argue. "I mean with kids your age. Not about chess or books."

With that, Arella held onto the book tightly in her left hand while Raven glowered. It was true that she had mostly kept to herself except for a few games of chess with older adults who were surprised of her skill.

"You want me to go to a party." Raven crossed her arms over her chest. She hadn't even finished the chapter before she had been rudely interrupted, "Will you return my book then?"

"Afterwards." Arella's forehead creased with concern, "Please just have one night of fun, Raven."

"Fine."

She repressed a sigh and stood up from the couch and did her best to ignore the few nosy guest who had listened in on their conversation. Arella smiled with her small victory while Raven silently fumed on the inside but held her tongue.

"I've already set out your clothes."

She nodded once in acknowledgment and shuffled down the empty hall and peered over her shoulder to see that Arella was still watching. Raven slipped her hands into the pockets of her dark gray sweater and turned around the corner and headed for the pair of chrome elevators.

It had taken her less than twenty minutes to change into the lavender blouse and black jeans her mother had laid out on the bed. Raven quickly washed her face with a warm wet towel before running a brush through her hair for good measure. She glanced at the digital clock on the bedside table that read 11:15pm. Forty-five minutes, only forty-five minutes until they rang in the new year and then she would have her book rightfully returned in her possession.

"It'll be over soon." She whispered to herself.

She could hear the loud music before she had even entered the large room. The lighting was soft—similar to that of the lobby— while white and blue balloons were tethered down on tables. It was crowded with teenagers dancing in groups, talking with friends, or filling up at the snack table. Raven kept to her arms around her waist and made a B-line for an empty spot of the couch across the room.
