Some people think that waking up early in the morning is the best thing that ever happened to them. They say waking up to the smell of coffee and bacon cooking in the kitchen was the life. Talking with your wife or husband while you ate, then you headed off to work. I never quite understood why coffee and bacon are so amazing to people. I know I didn’t grow up during the time when life was good and you didn’t have a care in the world besides paying the bills and making sure you had food on the table. Well making sure you get food in general is main issue these days. The elders always tell us stories on how there were these places called ‘grocery stores.’ They said that you could go into this ‘store’ and buy all the food you needed for that month. How can someone have that much food? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Even getting a full plate of food for the day makes you feel like royalty in this time. Some people are calling it the "post- apocalyptic world."

Whatever that means. A lot of people are using words like 'infected’, 'virus', 'zombies', and “over populating the earth”. At least that’s how others explain it. The army on the other hand has some sort of scientific explanation for everything now and how to kill the things that are taking out the human race. The army 'knows' how to deal with it, wasting all of the city’s precious ammo. We are already low on the stuff as it is. Idiots, that’s all the army is. Not only are they wasting ammo, but also supplies, and food on themselves when there are people who need it more. Like us, I mean us as in the people who are suffering like my sister and I. Since we are younger than twenty we are considered weak. Useless compared to them. I frowned looking down at the dark streets below. I pulled my knees closer to my chest. Thinking about the life we had to live in, made my stomach churn. Glancing back over at my sleeping sister, I considered what needed to be done. We’ve been held up here in this hole for days. The old building isn’t doing her any good…

Shaking my head, I stood up from my perch on the ledge of the building and carefully hopped down. I took one glance back at the sight behind me. The city skyline must have looked a lot better back whenever the good days were. Now they were rotten, broken, and or fallen over. Even with the massive cranes surrounding the stable ones. I wondered if they planned on fixing up the buildings for people to live in. However, no one knew who ‘they’ were. But, the skyline did look pretty with the moon shining through the holes in the buildings.

Who in their right minds would try and fix up this worthless place. It’d probably be best if- My train of thought broke by the sound of quiet coughs. I looked back to where my sister was sleeping. A few feet away under a poorly made tent. She sat up and was having a coughing fit. Wandering over to her, I kneelt down and started rubbing her back gently. After a few minutes she calmed down and smiled before leaning against me.

“Sorry El, I didn’t wake you did I?” She asked with shaky breaths. I shook my head.

“No, I was already up.” I replied moving to a sitting position.

“Ellis! You have to sleep! What if something bad happ-“ She paused to let out a small cough fit before continuing, “Happens, and you’re not well rested.” She stared at me hard with her deep blue eyes.

I ran my hand through my dark brown hair and sighed. “Someone has to look after you. I can’t do that while I’m asleep.”

She pouted and crossed her arms. “Well I’m not going back to sleep until you do.” She stated flatly looking away.

“Lani… You need your rest. We can’t have your fever getting any higher than it has been.” I explained hoping to reason with her. With no response I gave in. “Fine, but you have to rest until morning. Okay?” I bargained.

She spun her head around expressing a large grin. “Promise to sleep this time?”

I nodded and lied down next to her bed. I heard her shuffle and rearrange her blankets so that they were placed over both of us before she lied down herself. Without warning she placed her hands over my eyes. “Sleep.” was all she stated. She didn’t move her hand until I closed my eyes. I prayed that sleep would
