Chapter Thirty-Four: Did Darren Nevis Just Drop the L-Bomb on Me?
The limo pulled to a stop and I could already hear the low, deep thrum of the loud music. As soon as the driver opened up the door for the four of us to get out, the sound invaded my ears and deafened me. We were all struck with a sense of awe as we exited the vehicle.
Ryan was the first to exit, closely followed by Adam who was a true gentleman and turned to help us ladies get out of the car with our modesty still in tact. I was so self-conscious I didn't even dare lean forward an inch in case a full moon ended up flashing the world. Wouldn't that be a grand story to tell the grand kids? Definitely not one Liss would ever forget to tell every Christmas.
We said our thanks to the driver and made our way towards the school's sports hall, which had been transformed with sparkles, banners, balloons, and pretty much all the generic party decorations you could think of.
“Wow, they did a real good job this year.” Melissa murmured softly.
“Yeah they did.” Adam nodded his head in agreement. I watched with bright eyes as he held his elbow out to Ryan, who linked his arm through with a impish grin. “Well this is it.”
I copied Adam and held my arm out to Melissa. “Let's rock this joint.”
The four of us shared one last smile, as if looking at ourselves one last time before we walked into the hall to undergo some sort of transformation. Like we'd be walking out as different people altogether. Which in a way, I guess we were. It was the end of an era which was high school, and the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. One I knew we'd still be sharing together.
I was in excitement overload, I wasn't sure just how my feet were still touching the ground.
Melissa was squealing in delight and clutched onto my arm even tighter as we moved on through past the teachers who were stationed at the entrance to check our tickets. Next we each got our photo taken with our dates. I knew Melissa was sad that I was the one next to her on such a memorable occasion and not a boy she was madly in love with, but as far as substitutes go, I was the best, if I do say so myself.
After that we moved on through into the crowd of dancing teenagers. The music was blaring, the lights were flashing and everyone seemed to be on a high. Except Melissa, there seemed to be something missing, and she was trying her best to hide it from me. I thought about pretending that I hadn't noticed it, but I couldn't.
I tugged on her arm and pulled her close so she could hear. “Hey, don't sweat it. You'll have your man by the end of tonight. I promise.”
Melissa gave me a big fake smile. “I know, Shay. It's just...what about Liam?”
“What about him? If the guy even so much as looks at you weirdly, you tell me and I'll teach him another lesson he won't forget, okay?” This made her laugh, and I quickly seized the opportunity. “This is the perfect time to show him what he's lost out on. Parade about the place like you own it, cause in that dress you can own anything or anyone if you know what I'm saying,” I laughed and she blushed, “flirt and have fun, Liss! Just say to yourself Liam who?”
She nodded her head, her sparkle slowly coming back to life. “You're right. You're absolutely right, Shay.”
“Damn straight I'm right, so wipe that pout off your face and lets get wasted!”
