We all climbed in, squashed painfully. It was only when, the door and we were swallowed by the darkness that I realised I was still holding onto peters hand tightly. He squeezed my hand and I squeezed back, almost telling him in a way, i was alright Everyone started to fight for their own space and we were pushed to the back.
"Go!" Peter shouted, obviously feeling anxious that the wardrobe was becoming a little too small.
"Get back!" Wailed Susan.
I didn't realise that my grandfather owned so many coats Everybody was still groaning, I began to feel a little light headed. My mind became weak, but his wasn't the usual headache, something seemed different, very different. I went cold and felt a tickling sensation down my spine causing me to loose my balance and fall to the bottom of the wooden wardrobe. I fell backwards, taking Peter down too, luckily, to my advantage, he acted as a cushion.
"Sorry" I mumbled. But the butterflies in my stomach wouldn't settle.
"It's okay" he smiled.
"Impossible!" We heard susan breathe out into the cold air and I, when i finally looked up, agreed. Snow coated the dead grass below us not to mention, the tree as far as my eye could see.
"Don't worry, it's probably just your imagination" Lucy giggled with a mischevoous glint in her eyes.
"I don't suppose saying we're sorry would quite cover it?" Peter asked guilty. Lucy looked at them, she winked at me and I somehow got the message. I scooped some snow up with my cupped hands and held them behind my back.
"No, it wouldn't. But this might!"
Lucy nailed Peter in the face with a snowball, and he threw one back slapping me round the face with an icy hand. That was it, the snowball fight began. The balls of cold ice flew left, right and centre. By this point, nobody could see where they were actually throwing because snow had completley covered our faces. However, I saw Susan pelt Ed in the arm with one, trying to persuade him to join in on the fun.
"Ow!" He rubbed his arm "stop it!" He shrieked. A silence falls over us, we all began to realise that Ed really did lie to us all.
"You little liar!" Peter pointed a finger at Edmund threateningly.
"You didn't believe her either!" He reminded us staring around incriminating eyes.
"Apologize to Lucy." Peter was getting himself wound up. But Ed just continued to look at her, he didn't care.
"Say you're sorry!" He raised his voice even more this time. Peter stepped up to him and Ed began to back away.
"Alright! I'm sorry." He surrendered, in fear."That's alright, some little children just don't know when to stop pretending." She joked and looked at him with the same smug expression he had used with that phrase earlier.
"very funny." Ed muttered and rolled his eyes."Maybe we should go back" Susan said in a worrying tone.
"No!" I piped in, they looked at me as if I was going crazy. I probably was, I had bottled up so much lately, since finding out the truth, I haven't really known how to feel and now I remembered, I didn't want to forget. I wanted to see it, my past life here.
"Can't we at lease take a look around?" Thank Aslan for Edmund, because all eyes were taken off me and put onto him. Peter seemed to be in a trail of thought when he popped out with an idea.
"I think Lucy should decide!" Just as he said those words Lucy's cheeks turned a shade of pink, flattered by all this attention.
"I all want you to meet Mr. Tumnus!" She exclaimed
"Well Mr. Tumnus it is then"
Peter ,yet again, walked back through the wardrobe again, when he returned he had five fur coats.
"We can use these coats." Stated Peter clearly.
"Peter, they don't belong to us." Susan pointed out.
"Well I don't think the professor will mind, do you Lilli?" I shook my head "And if you think about it logically we are not even taking them out of the wardrobe." Peter spoke carefully as he handed the coats out.
"But that's a girl's coat!" Ed wailed
"I know." Peter said bluntly.the snow that covered the floor was thick, and it was becoming harder to walk. However, Peter was trying to make it fun for the both of us, we reached a hill and he pulled me closer as we began to walk down together. Till Peter tripped over a branch covered by the whote frosting, and we both went rolling down the steep slope. He landed on top of me this time, and we held each others gaze.
"Ahem" Lucy coughed and Peter got up quickly, he then put out a hand and helped me up. Lucy pulled took my hand, and together we started walking toward Mr. Tumnus' cave through snow yet again. Lucy was mumbling on about all the nice things Mr Tumnus had for a while now, and i couldn't help but feel that this part of land did seem the slightest bit familiar. sudden, Lucy's mumblings had cone to an end
"and tea and..." I followed her gaze to Mr Tumnus' cracked open door and we both ran off to see what was wrong. I overtook Lucy almost immediately, he was one of my people, and I cared.
"Lilli! LUCY!" Peter followed closely after us. Ed was the only one who walked to Tumnus' house.
Peter came in behind me, and wrapped his arms around me protectively. Lucy came in next, shocked at the sight. His house was trashed, the walls had been scratched, papers had been scattered and everything was in the completely wrong place.
"Who would do something like this?"
Edmund stepped on broken picture of an older looking faun, presumably, his father.
"Peter what is that on the wall?" I asked nervously, a tear beginnig to roll down my cheek. Tumnus was one of my fathers people and to think that i could have stopped them if maybe i had got to him a bit quicker made me frown upon myself. He let go of me and ripped the parchment scroll off the wall, and began to read it.
"The Former occupant of these premises, the Faun Tumnus, is under arrest and awaiting his trial on a charge of High Treason against her imperial Majesty
Jadis, Queen of Narnia, Chatelaine of Cair Paravel, Empress of the Lone Islands,
also to comforting her said Majesty's enemies, harbouring spies and fraternizing with Humans. signed Maugrim, captain
of the Secret Police, Long live the
Queen."
"Now we should really go." Susan whimpered.
"But we have to help him!" Lucy cried.
"It's out of our hands now Lu."
"You don't get it do you? I'm the human!!! He helped ME!"
"Maybe we should call the police"
"These are the police!"
"Besides, he's a criminal!"
I glared at Ed, I was angry, really angry. I left the house to calm down, I sat outside on a large rock, to be joined suprisingly, by susan.
"Your beginning to worry me Lillith, you don't look too good. Have you been crying?"
I didnt have time to answer before i burst into tears yet again and Susan gave me a shoulder to cry on. Midway through my breakdown we heard a peculiar sound.
"Psst!" Susan and I looked up into a tree as the others filed out of the trashed house.
"Did that bird just 'psst' us?"
we all stepped nearer warily. I heard rustles from the bushes and one by one we huddled together. peter holding onto my waist tightly. from the rustling bushes came a small creature.
"It's a beaver." Lu stated the obvious. This wasn't any beaver, i thought, this beaver kept me in hiding for a majority of my life, before i had been sent away and i was being hidden among the outskirts of narnia. Peter approached beaver, clicking his tongue and holding his hand out.
"Here, boy" he clicked his tounge "come here..." Peter put his hand out further forwards, Mr. Beaver stares at it then sits upright.
"Well, I ain't gonna smell it if that's what you want!" Peter looked stunned, I heard Lucy giggling.
I stepped out from behind Peter slowly walking towards him, till i bent down to his level.
"Lillith... is that really you?"
"yeah, it is." i almost cried at the sight of my old friend. I could feel the others burning gazes on my back.
"Lil, you didn't tell us?" I didn't know who it was. Mr Beaver, took on a serious look suddenly his gaze faded behind me.
"Lucy Pevensie?" Mr Beaver questioned looking to see which one she was.
"Yes?"
Mr. Beaver handed her a handkerchief.
"This is the handkerchief I gave to Mr-"
"Tumnus." Beaver interrupted "He gave it to me just before they took him."
"Is he alright?" She wore a worried look.
"Further in."
Mr. Beaver scurried off gesturing for them to follow him. Susan grabs Peter by the arm.
"Peter, we don't know what you are doing."
"She's right. How do we know we can trust this beaver?"
"He say's he knows the faun." Peter replied.
"He's a beaver...he shouldn't be saying anything!"
"Is everything alright?" Beaver asked from over the hill.
"Yes. We were just talking" Peter explained.
"That's better left for safer corners."
"He means the trees." Lucy looked up towards all the bare branches.
The Walk to Beaver's dam was beautiful we went through the cliffs under a bridge and then we saw the Dam, where i spent a year of my life, my childhood.
"There is home sweet home."
"It hasn't changed one bit" I cried and began to sprint down to the door where I stopped and waited for the others.
"Oh, what a beautiful dam Mr. Beaver." Lucy complimented it.
"Merely a trifle" he said plainly as they made way down to me. I heard a familiar voice behind me which brought tears to my eyes.
"Is that you Beaver? If I find out that you've been out with Badger again I'll...Oh," she stopped. "they're not Badgers. I never thought I would see this day."
" You couldn't give me ten minutes warning...look at this fur." She ruffled it.
"I would have given you a week if I thought it would help" they chuckled. Mrs Beaver stopped suddenly.
"Lillith... My dear, i-is that you?" She stuttered
"Yes, it really is" anothet tear rolled down my cheek.
She ran and hugged my shins as she hardly reached my knees despite my shortness.
"Look at you your so grown up."
I turned, everyone had a look of confusion upon their face.
"You've been here before?" Peter trembled. He looked hurt. I wasn't surprised. I should've told him, but i didn't, and I can't change that now.
"Well you must be cold and hungry. Let's get you inside for some food and civilised conversation." Mrs Beaver said trying to diffuse the tension
Lucy, Susan, Peter and I follow Mrs. Beaver inside.
Mrs Beaver pulled me to the side
"All your things are in your old room dear." She pointed to the door with a beam upon her face.
"Thank you"
I walked up to the small oak door that was so familiar to my eyes I was about to push it open, when my arm was grabbed by a cold hand.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He said gruffly under his breath, his grip tightening.
"you wouldn't of believed me, you didn't believe lucy"
I shook his had off of me with a look of disgrace planted upon my face, he turned away and joined the others at the table. My room was just the way I left it, nothing was out of place, my wooden wardrobe stood tall at the far end of the room, I opened the doors and was greeted by my old clothes, i pulled out an outfit that I could change into. I wore a crisp white, loose Henley style shirt and tight pants that were a dark shade of brown. I wore lace up boots which were made from leather with doe fur on the interior, and over that my fur coat which we pulled from the hangers in the wardrobe.
I re-entered the main room and all eyes were on me, I wasn't surprised I looked completely different from Peter and the others I almost stood out more than the beavers
"Fish and sticks, dear."
Mrs Beaver placed a plate, of Pretty much inedible food in front of Lucy, I didn't blame her, it had been a long time since i had stayed here and trust me, it takes some getting used to.
"is there nothing we can do about Mr. Tumnus?" Lucy looked up her eyes were glossy.
"well.. there's hope!"
Mr Beaver scoffed and spat out half of what he was drinking right onto us.
"Yeah, there's a load full of hope...
Aslan is on the move."
"Who's Aslan?" They asked
Mr. Beaver laughed hysterically, I would've too if i hadn't of known them. Mrs. Beaver finally realised they were serious and lays her hand on Mr. Beaver.
"you don't know do you?
"Well we haven't actually been here very long, and I still want to know where Lillith fits into all of this."
"He's only the king the whole wood, the true king of Narnia, her father!" He pointed a finger at me, and Susan and Peter stared wide eyed "and he's waiting for you!" Mr Beaver finished.
"waiting for us?" They looked among one an other
"You got to be joking, they don't even know about the prophecy! Look, Aslan's return, Tumnus' arrest.....the secret police! They're all happening because of you!"
"You're blaming us?" Susan raised her voice obviously feeling slightly less clever than usual.
"Not blaming you dear, thanking you." Mrs Beaver put it nicely.
There's.... a prophecy, When the true queen returns and Adam's flesh and Adam's bone sit in if Cair Paravel in throne side by side the evil is over and done."
"You know that doesn't really rhyme." Susan pointed out.
"I know, but you're missing the point!"
"It's long been told that two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve will appear to defeat the White Witch, alongside the High Queen and restore peace to Narnia.
"And you think we're the ones?" "Well you'd better be, Aslan's already fitted out your army!!!"
"Our Army?!" Lucy stated unbelievably.
"I think you've made a mistake; we're not heroes!"
"We're from Finchley!"
"I think it's time we were going." Peter began to get Up and throw on his warm coat.
"But what about Mr. Tumnus?" Lucy asked sad eyed.
"Sorry Lucy. It's out of our hands" he replied back.
"Thank you for your hospitality." Susan thanked "come on Lillith."
"I'm staying" I said bluntly. Peter stared in disbelief.
"This is my home and I wish to see my father after all these years."
Peter went red in the face angrily.
"Ed, time to go- Ed?"
We all looked around the room
"I'm going to kill him." Peter threatened.
"You may not have to...Has Edmund been to Narnia before?"
